Vice President JD Vance has congratulated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce on their engagement, but he also made some bizarre comments on the relationship regarding Kelce’s NFL team, Kansas City Chiefs.
He expressed concern regarding the couple
The US Vice President expressed concern that Swift and Kelce’s engagement would result in preferential treatment for Kelce’s team, Kansas City Chiefs, from the NFL.
He expressed these thoughts in a Wednesday, August 27, interview with USA Today.
He leaned into the rumors
Vance leaned into the conspiracy theory present among many NFL fans regarding Chiefs receiving preferential treatment.
The VP said he’s worried the high-profile romance will cause the NFL to ‘put a thumb on the scale’ for Kelce’s team.
He worries that the relationship will cause it
Vance said, “I will say as a football fan ― as a Cincinnati Bengals fan ― I hope that the NFL does not put a thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs just because Travis Kelce is now getting married to maybe the most famous woman in the world.”
Vance wants them to ‘follow the same rules’
The VP went on to note that he’s ‘worried they’re going to have a Super Bowl wedding thing this season,’ adding, “Can’t do it. The Kansas City Chiefs have to follow the same rules as everybody else.”
He’s worried refs will be ‘friendly’ with the Chiefs
Vance went on, “So if we see the refs being particularly friendly to Kansas City Chiefs players, then I think all football fans should be willing to push back on the NFL and say, ‘Look, you guys got to be fair.’”
“Just because Travis is getting married to Taylor, you still can’t put your thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs.”
The rumor has been going around
The VP’s remarks are in regard to longstanding rumors that NFL games have been rigged for the Chiefs, who became the first repeat Super Bowl champions in nearly two decades last year.
The NFL itself denounced the rumors
Earlier this year, NFL Referees Association executive director Scott Green issued a lengthy statement denouncing the ‘insulting and preposterous’ rumors.
He added that fans can ‘rest assured that on every single down, NFL Officials, both on the field and in the replay booth, are doing everything humanly possible to officiate every play correctly’.
But Vance also offered well-wishes
Despite the insinuation that Swift and Kelce’s relationship would cause problems for NFL fans, Vance did offer his congratulations and well-wishes elsewhere in his chat with the outlet.
“I’m a romantic when I see two people who are in love getting married,” he said. “I just wish ’em the best, and I congratulate ’em, and I hope they have a very long and healthy and happy life together.”
