A DIY specialist has shared insight on the household task that would only take you five minutes to do but could save you nearly $500 every year on energy bills.
Things are getting expensive

As we’re sure you’re aware, energy bills are getting expensive, and with temperatures rising and Winter coming up, heating will surely add to those bills.
But DIY specialist Glen Peskett from circular saw supplier Saxton Blades has shared insight on a task that can save you hundreds of money.
Many people overlook this task

The expert revealed that the task of cleaning your refrigerator coils, which a chore that many often overlook, can lower your energy bills by a significant amount, according to The Mirror.
He explained why it works
Peskett said, “Fridge coils are hidden away at the back or underneath, so most people don’t even realize they’re there, let alone that they get clogged up with dust.”
He explained why cleaning the coils could reduce your bills, adding that the fridge could use up more energy when it’s dirty.
Now is the best time to clean them

Peskett added of the fridge coils, “When they’re dirty, your fridge has to work much harder to keep food cold, which means it’s using more electricity and costing you more money.”
He went on, “Autumn is the ideal time to give your fridge coils a clean.”
Cleaning them in Autumn will reduce your bills in Winter

“With colder weather and heating season just around the corner, tackling it now means your fridge will run more efficiently, helping to cut bills and extend its lifespan,” Peskett added.
The quick task is frequently overlooked but can save you a lot of money, so it’s probably worth a try.
How you can clean them

Here’s how you can clean your fridge coils: start by switching off your fridge and removing the plug from the power supply.
Then, you’ll typically find the coils in the back of the fridge or at its base behind a protective grille.
You can use a vacuum

To clean the coils, you can start by using a vacuum with a brush attachment which will get rid of the top layer of dust, then go in with a piece of cloth to gently wipe down any remaining dust off the coils.
Once you’re done, just reattach the panel and replug your fridge and turn it on. Now you’re done, and it’ll be six months before you have to clean the coils again.
