Ethan Hawke has spoken about his daughter Maya Hawke, admitting one of his biggest regrets when it came to her childhood.
She’s his eldest daughter
Maya Hawke, best known for his role as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things, is Ethan Hawke’s eldest child, whom he shares with Uma Thurman.
He spoke about her career in his conversation with Sydney Sweeney on Variety’s Actors on Actors.
Hawke is proud of his daughter’s artistry
Hawke expressed his pride for his daughter’s artistry from a young age. He said, “I knew that she was gonna be a very good one.”
“That was her safe place, watercoloring, dancing, singing all throughout her childhood.”
She was able to find herself in it
The father went on to say that Maya found a way to freely express herself through acting, sharing, “Anything that had to do with human communication was something she vibrated to.”
He recalled her relationship with her teachers
“I remember some teacher said, ‘Maya, are you happy?’” Hawke went on.
“Cause they were worried about her. And she said something to the effect of, ‘Do you really think that’s the question?’”
Maya showed interest in art at a young age
“I thought, ‘I love this kid,’” Hawke recalled.
“She was about 13. [Maya said] ‘I don’t think that’s a very interesting question. I think there’s a lot more interesting questions than whether I’m happy or not. Am I happy? No. But I don’t aspire to be happy.’”
But there were things he regrets about her childhood
Despite his pride in her, Hawke admitted, “There were a lot of things about her childhood, that were really, really hard and complicated and things I regret for her.”
Although he didn’t share the exact issues Maya faced, the actress herself has previously shared that she struggled with dyslexia since childhood.
Maya Hawke chose the same career as her parents
Maya followed in her parents’ footsteps in pursuing a career in acting. She had her first role in the BBC mini series production of Little Women in 2017.
She went on to receive multiple roles in movies and TV shows like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Stranger Things, and Inside Out 2.
