While the creamy texture of avocados is cherished around the globe, it’s not always easy to get a perfectly ripe avocado.
But one woman has shared the hack she’s been using for four years to ripen avocados, and says it ‘always works’.
You can’t always pick the right one
It’s not guaranteed that you’ll always pick the perfectly ripe avocado at the grocery store, and even when you do, it can be challenging to time your meals in a way that ensures you use it before it goes bad.
But you don’t have to wait long

Because of this, most people will find themselves buying avocados that have yet to ripen up in order to avoid buying ones that are too mushy. But you might not need to wait long for them to ripen.
One member of a Facebook page called Delicious Recipes shared her own hack for ripening avocados.
She explained her personal approach to it
While some people might opt for putting their avocados in the microwave or baking them in order to speed up their ripening, Natalie Curwin says she buries hers in rice.
The participant explained exactly what she does

Curwin posted, “We go through tons of avocados. The best way I’ve found that always works to have perfectly ripe avocados is to buy them when they are very hard and green and then store them on rice so they ripen evenly and don’t bruise.”
“They ripen pretty quickly (often in two days), but if you bury them in the rice, they seem to ripen a little more quickly, like overnight.”
She’s been doing it for four years

The online community member added, “I’ve been doing this for four years and throw away very few avocados for being brown and gross.”
“They even seem to go bad less quickly, but you do need to plan a little.”
Their lifespan even increases
Curwin claimed that burying the avocados in rice even extends their lifespan.
Another group member, Nancy Koket, revealed another trick, saying, “Once they are ripe, put them in water in the refrigerator and they will last a very long time from there.”
The water will help extend their lifespan
“Make sure they are fully covered in water. I use a large mason jar. I once forgot about them in the back of the fridge for six weeks, and they were still edible. Sounds crazy, but it’s true,” Koket added.
But why does this method work?
The reason burying the avocados in rice helps them ripen faster is because the rice essentially captures the ethylene gas and accelerates fruit ripening, per The Mirror.
If you’re going to do this, make sure you’re not leaving them to over-ripen or go bad.
