The Oscar-winning actress was 79 when she passed away in California.
They expressed their gratitude
The family said, per People, “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.”
The family spoke about her passions
In the statement, Keaton’s family also shared the causes she was most passionate about.
They said, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
They hadn’t shared details right away
The family hadn’t shared Keaton’s cause of death right away, with a spokesperson telling the outlet on October 11, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”
Her health had declined ‘suddenly’
A source close to the actress also told the outlet that, prior to her death, her health had ‘declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her’.
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” they said.
She rose to fame in the ‘70s
Keaton made a name for herself in the 1970s after her appearance in The Godfather films and her work with director Woody Allen.
She also collaborated more than once with director Nancy Meyers, as well as worked as a director herself on the 1987 documentary Heaven, Hanging Up (2000) and an episode of Twin Peaks.
She never married but she had two kids
Keaton never married, but she had two children; daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001.
Back in 2019, she spoke about never marrying, saying, “I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball. I remember in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”
