Less than a week before the season 5 premiere of the hit dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale, it has been announced that the following sixth season will be the show’s last.
Based on Marget Attwood’s 1985 “Handmaid’s Tale” novel, the Hulu series has captivated viewers since its premiere in 2017, and now, fans will have to brace themselves for an emotional goodbye.

The futuristic dystopian series has been critically acclaimed and beloved by fans for its gritty portrayal of Gilead, formerly the United States of America, where women’s bodies are the property of the state and women are treated as basically glorified breeders.
The show’s fifth season will premiere on Hulu on September 14th.
Now, ahead of the new season, the streaming service announced that it has renewed the Margaret Atwood adaptation for a sixth and final season.
The show’s creator, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller made the announcement on Thursday.
“It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,'” the press release began.
“We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”
President of ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, Craig Erwich, also spoke about the show’s ending.
” In the time since, it has been a privilege and pleasure to work with some of the finest creative talent in our industry on this show — a distinct and exceptional group of people who continue to produce the highest quality television that has made and continues to make significant cultural impact.
“Bruce, Warren, Lizzie and the entire team at MGM have been amazing partners, and we hope fans enjoy these last two seasons.”
As aforementioned, the show’s fifth season will hit Hulu on September 14th.
