'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 5 Set To Premiere September 14

Blessed day — we finally have a premiere date for the fifth season of The Handmaid's Tale.

Fans of the hit Hulu series were shocked to learn last month that Emily, played by the iconic Alexis Bledel, would not be returning for the fifth season. Escaped handmaid Emily leaving means the show's main protagonist June Osbourne will be down an ally.

While a lot of questions are still up in the air, Hulu just gave fans a sneak peek at the upcoming season and it looks unbelievable.

Based on Marget Attwood's 1985 "Handmaid's Tale" novel, the Hulu series has captivated viewers since its premiere in 2017.

The futuristic dystopian series has been critically acclaimed and beloved by fans for its gritty portrayal of Gilead, formerly the United States of America, where women's bodies are the property of the state and women are treated as basically glorified breeders.

It was announced last month that after four powerful seasons and four Emmy nominations (and one win), Alexis Bledel was leaving the series.

"After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid's Tale at this time," the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants star said in a statement provided to USA TODAY by her representative.

Now, amidst this transition, Hulu has finally let fans know when the fifth season will be hitting their screens.

Hulu's description for the show teased: "June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose."

"The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power," the description continued.
