Actress Sydney Sweeney has issued a statement about her new movie Christy debuting with one of the worst box office openings of all time for a film of its size.
The movie is a biopic
Christy is a biopic about Christy Martin, a female boxing champion and it stars Sweeney, 28, as the athlete.
The movie explores the domestic violence that the athlete faced in her married life as well as the challenges of being a female boxer.
It opened with bad box office numbers
The movie debuted this weekend to painfully low numbers. According to Box Office Mojo, it ranks number 13 on the list of worst box office openings of all time, as it only made $1.3 million.
This comes in a series of box office flops for the actress as her movies Americana and Eden, which came out in August, made less than $500,000 and only $2.5 million respectively.
Sweeney has been facing backlash
These struggles with numbers came following Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle jeans ad as well as news that she has been a registered Republican since 2024.
Sweeney was actually asked about whether she was worried about Christy’s success in light of recent discourse around the actress.
She said she wasn’t worried about it
In an interview with GQ on Tuesday, November 4, the interviewer asked Sweeney if she was worried people would skip on watching Christy due to her beliefs on ‘certain issues.’
She said, “No. No, I think that if somebody is closed off because of something they read online to a powerful story like Christy, then I hope that something else can open their eyes to being open to art and being open to learning, and I’m not going to be affected by that.”
Sweeney has now responded to the loss
Now, following the disappointing debut of her movie, Sweeney wrote on Instagram, “i am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made.”
“Proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
She explained what the movie means to her
Sweeney went on, “this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives.”
Sweeney thanked those who tuned in
She added, “thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”
She’s proud of the movie regardless
“So yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you,” the actress concluded.
