Actress Ruby Rose has written a post about Sydney Sweeney, in a rant where she claimed the latter was the reason for the movie Christy debuting with extremely low box office numbers.
The movie came out on Friday
Christy, directed by David Michôd, made its box office debut on Friday, November 7, but people didn’t exactly flock to the theaters.
The biopic is based on the life of boxing legend Christy Martin, who is played by Sweeney, 28.
It didn’t have a very good opening
The movie debuted with extremely low numbers, coming in at number 13 on the list of worst box office openings of all time, per Box Office Mojo, as it only made $1.3 million.
In a statement shared on Threads, Ruby Rose claimed she was originally attached to play Martin, and that Sweeney was the reason for the movie’s low numbers.
She doesn’t seem to like the casting
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” Rose wrote, referring to Martin.
“Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
Rose didn’t appreciate Sweeney’s response
“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS [Sydney Sweeney] did it for the ‘people’,” Rose wrote.
“None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
She’s referring to Sweeney’s statement
Rose seems to be referring to the statement put out by Sweeney on Monday, November 10, where she shared her thoughts on the movie’s underwhelming performance at the box office.
Sweeney wrote on Instagram, “I am so deeply proud of this movie.”
Sweeney said she believes the story could ‘save lives’
“This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives,” the actress wrote in part.
She thanked those who actually watched it
“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” Sweeney continued.
She’s not making ‘art for numbers’
“So yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you Christy. i love you,” the actress concluded.
