American rapper 50 Cent has come under fire for a controversial post he shared following the announcement that Zohran Mamdani is now the mayor of New York City.
Mamdani has been officially elected
Zohran Mamdani, 34, has been officially elected as NYC’s new mayor, having won over 50.4% of the vote.
He is the youngest person to be elected in over 100 years and is the first Muslim and South Asian to take up this position.
The Mayor has been making headlines
Mamdani has been catching people’s attention even before his win, as he has openly expressed his dislike for his opponent Andrew Cuomo’s policies.
He also openly criticized President Donald Trump in his victory speech and hasn’t been shy about sharing his opinions on what he disagrees with.
He’ll be raising the corporate tax rate
A lot of rich and famous people aren’t happy with the Mayor, as he announced his plans to raise the corporate tax rate to 11.5% as well as introduce a flat 2% tax for New Yorkers whose salary is over $1 million a year.
One person who showed his dislike was 50 Cent
Rapper 50 Cent wasted no time in expressing his annoyance with this policy as he posted an AI-generated image on Instagram of a gravestone that implied that NYC was dead.
The image read, “RIP NYC. FOUNDED 1624. DIED 2025.”
People under his post quickly criticized him
Users were quick to share their thoughts under his post, with one person writing, “Rich people being upset about elections is a good thing for regular citizens.”
Another user wrote, ‘Crying like a baby over 2%.”
Another said they changed their opinion on the rapper
“I liked you before but going against Mamadani is not a good look coming from a rich celebrity,” wrote a third user.
“Mamadani’s policies will help the lower income families and people struggling getting food on the table. I am excited to see what he will do as a mayor. I see this as being great for New York!” they added.
50 Cent has previously expressed his dislike for Mamdani
Speaking about the Mayor back in June, 50 Cent said he would pay to get him out of the city.
“Where did he come from? Whose friend is this? I’m not feeling this plan. No. I will give him $258,750 and a first class one-way ticket away from NY. I’m telling Trump what he said too!” the rapper said.
Mamdani responded to this
During an interview with The Beat with Ari Melber on MSNBC this week, Mamdani responded, “He’s a critic!”
“I didn’t even know what my salary would be until I opened up Instagram and saw this thing that was like, ’50 Cent offers Mamdani x-amount of money.’”
The Mayor joked about it
“I was like, ‘That’s a very specific amount of money. Oh my God!’” Mamdani said.
He also joked, “Even though we have a disagreement on tax policy, every time I get a death threat, I still listen to Many Men.”
