Pete Davidson revealed the words his mother told him while he was in rehab that helped him stay sober.
He was on Theo Von’s podcast
In a Tuesday, September 23, appearance on comedian Theo Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend With Theo Von, Davidson got candid about his bond with his mother, Amy.
The Saturday Night Live alum shared how his mother helped him stay sober.
Davidson said she’s incredibly supportive
“She’s been the most supportive ever,” Davidson shared.
“It got to a point where she called me when I was in rehab and she was like, ‘My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and see that my son has died,’” he said.
It was unusual for her to say that
Davidson, 31, explained, “And she’s never been like that, you know, because she’s so supportive and just wants to always have positivity around.”
Von, 45, responded, “Yeah. And she already lost something she loved,” referring to Davidson’s late father, Scott Davidson, who died on 9/11.
It was shocking to hear his mother say this
“Exactly. And that f***ing killed me. So like I was like, ‘Alright, you can’t die until she’s dead at least,’” Davidson added.
“My mom’s the most supportive person in the world. She’s a cool lady. The best.”
Davidson went on to praise his mother
When a photo of Davidson’s mother was projected onscreen, Von joked, “I want to marry a nurse.”
Davidson then said, “Look how cute my mom is. She’s just a sweet lady. She never dated after my dad died. Just raised me and my sister alone and worked hard.”
Von complimented their close bond
The podcast host went on to compliment the closeness of Davidson’s family, with the actor responding, “I’m a lucky guy in that aspect.”
“I have a really supportive, cool family that has never asked me for anything. And they should [and] they could and they don’t, and a lot of them need stuff.”
Davidson has been open about his journey
The SNL alum has previously opened up about his journey with sobriety and mental health.
He checked into a wellness facility in July 2024, a year after he had sought treatment for issues related to PTSD and borderline personality disorder.
He’s also in the process of tattoo removal
The comedian and actor has also begun a long process of removing his tattoos, going into detail about why he’s doing so in an April interview with Variety.
He said, “I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up.”
He’s removing them now that he’s sober
“So I’m just removing them and starting fresh, because that’s what I think works best for me and for my brain,” Davidson explained to the outlet.
“When I look in the mirror, I don’t want the reminder of ‘Oh yeah, you were a f***ing drug addict. Like, that’s why you have SpongeBob smoking a joint on your back.’ They should have meaning.”
