Pete Davidson has opened up about feeling ‘embarrassed’ when he was ‘sexualized’ by the public following his relationship with ex-fiancée Ariana Grande.
He reflected on the attention
Speaking to the podcast The Breakfast Club on Wednesday, August 13, Davidson recalled feeling uncomfortable by the public’s attention surrounding his love life.
The 31-year-old shared how he felt when it all went down during his early career years on Saturday Night Live.
He was upset that people didn’t talk about his work
Speaking to Charlamagne Tha God, Davidson said of SNL, “I brought a lot of pop culture into the show, like I made it [a] sort of tabloidly, trendy thing unintentionally.”
“Also, I was embarrassed by it because… no one talked about any work I was doing,” he shared.
The misplaced attention is what hurt him the most
The actor admitted that the attention towards his sex life rather than his career was hurtful. Davidson said, “They were just like, ‘Oh, that’s the f*** stick.’ And that hurt so much.”
He added that people around him noticed how ‘sad’ and ‘embarrassed’ he was by the attention.
The host didn’t seem to understand him at first
Charlamagne, 47, initially seemed confused by Davidson’s hurt, saying, “You was banging a lot of hot chicks,” to which Davidson sighed and responded, “You know, on paper, that sounds great.”
He explained why it bothered him
Davidson went on to elaborate, “It’s embarrassing, ’cause, you know… It’s Hollywood. Everybody f*** everyone.”
“Why are they focusing on me?” he questioned, before saying that he believes it was because he was “not Glen Powell handsome.”
But Davidson didn’t want people to misunderstand
Davidson said, “I don’t want to victimize myself in any way because I’m cool, but the sexualization of me — if that was a girl, people would be like, there would be a march for it… Seriously.”
The interviewer asked him about the memes
When Charlamagne asked Davidson about where being labeled as someone with ‘big d*** energy’ came from, he said, “Uh it was I think it was like the New York Times or something when I started dating someone that I guess they considered out of my league.”
“Which I think everyone is out of my league, but you know, uh they were like, ‘This guy must have big d*** energy.’ And then someone confirmed it.”
Ariana Grande once joked about him
In 2018, Ariana Grande made a joke when responding to a fan who asked ‘how long Pete is’, referring to her Sweetener track Pete Davidson.
Although the fan quickly clarified they meant to ask how long the track would be, Grande joked, “Like 10 inches? …oh f***…i mean…like a lil over a minute.”
Davidson is expecting his first child
Davidson was in a relationship with Grande from May 2018 to November 2018. He is now expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt.
