The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle recalled a rule she had to follow in her early days as a royal that didn’t feel like her genuine self.
She reflected on it in a recent interview
Speaking to Emily Chang on The Circuit in a Tuesday, August 26 episode, Markle recalled the one royal rule she didn’t enjoy following.
Within the wide-ranging conversation about Meghan’s life, Chang asked her, “Is there an inherent tension in trying to be relatable while also being a duchess?”
She likes being herself
The 44-year-old Duchess said, “No, I don’t find — I’m just being myself. So I think, probably, it was different several years ago where I couldn’t be as vocal.”
She seemed to refer to the status quo within the royal family which she had to follow before stepping back with Prince Harry from their royal roles in 2020.
Markle revealed that one rule
In the episode, which came out the same day as the second season of With Love, Meghan on Netflix, Markle said, “I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time.”
This brought a laugh out of her host as the two giggled about it.
She further explained why she didn’t like it
Markle continued, “Let’s be honest, that was not very myself. I hadn’t seen pantyhose since the ’80s, when they came in the little egg? That felt a little bit inauthentic, but that’s a silly example.”
Markle couldn’t be as authentic as she wanted to
“But it is an example of when you’re able to dress the way you wanna dress and you’re able to say the things that are true and you’re able to show up in the space really organically and authentically, that’s being comfortable in your own skin,” she said.
“And that’s, of course, had different chapters in my life.”
But she feels better about it now
The Duchess of Sussex added, “But right now, no, I don’t feel, I don’t feel that I need to prove anything.”
Markle previously shared how she would dress to ‘blend in’ with the royal family before she took a step back from the job.
She ‘rarely wore color’
In the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, she revealed, “Most of the time that I was in the U.K., I rarely wore color. There was thought in that.”
“To my understanding, you could never wear the same color as Her Majesty [Queen Elizabeth] if there’s a group event, but then you also shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family.”
