Leonardo DiCaprio has shared how he’s been able to handle his life in the public eye.
He prefers to separate his life
In an interview with Time, published on Monday, December 8, the Oscar winner explained that he recognizes his position as a public figure, but prefers to keep his private life out of the spotlight.
“It’s been a balance I’ve been managing my whole adult life,” he said.
DiCaprio has a ‘simple philosophy’
“And still I’m not an expert,” the 51-year-old told the outlet.
“I think my simple philosophy is only get out there and do something when you have something to say, or you have something to show for it. Otherwise, just disappear as much as you possibly can.”
This works well with his career
DiCaprio pointed out that this mindset of keeping his off-camera life away from the spotlight as much as possible works well with his public career.
“I was like, ‘OK, how do I have a long career?’” he shared.
He doesn’t want to bother people
“Because I love what I do, and I feel like the best way to have a long career is to get out of people’s face,” DiCaprio explained.
The One Battle After Another star shared that he had wanted to be an actor since his pre-teens.
He would ask his parents for auditions
“I was the person telling my dad and my mom, ‘Get me to auditions! We need to do this! Try to pick me up from school at 4 o’clock!’” DiCaprio shared.
His dislike for school actually inspired his choice to be an actor. “I was like, ‘This is a bummer! I gotta start thinking about what I want to do for work immediately.’”
DiCaprio still shares some things
Although the actor prefers to keep his privacy, he has been open about reaching the milestone of entering his 50s.
“It creates a feeling like you have a desire to just be more honest and not waste your time,” he told Esquire in an August interview.
It helps him picture the future
“I can only imagine how the next few decades are going to progress,” DiCaprio went on.
“I look at my mother, for example, and she just says exactly what she thinks and wastes no time. She spends no time trying to fake it.”
He’s still willing to take risks
“Being more upfront and risking having things fall apart or risk the disagreements or risk going your separate ways from any type of relationship in life—the personal, professional—it’s that you just don’t want to waste your time anymore,” DiCaprio said.
“You have to just be much more upfront. It’s almost a responsibility because much more of your life is behind you than it is ahead of you.”
