It seems that both Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s legal troubles are far from over. While Amber’s ex-husband is set to head back to trial next month for allegedly punching a crew member in 2018, the Aquaman star is still being investigated in an ongoing purgery case in Australia.
In a new statement released to ET , the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment explained that the since-closed case is still undergoing investigation.
Back in 2015, Amber Heard, still married to Johnny Depp at the time, traveled to Australia with their two dogs, Pistol and Boo, without declaring them at customs.
Australia has a strict quarantine policy, and since the two Yorkshire Terriers failed to go through customs and adhere to Australia’s mandatory 10-day quarantine, the actress was officially charged with two counts of illegally importing her animals.
After pleading guilty to falsifying travel documents in court, Amber’s case was closed — until recently.
Despite the case being closed, a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment told E! News back in October 2021 that “the department is seeking to obtain witness statements and once obtained, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions will consider whether the evidence is sufficient to warrant pursuance of the matter.”
Now, in a new statement to ET, the department made it clear the investigation is still ongoing.
“The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (department) is investigating allegations of perjury by Ms. Heard during court proceedings for the 2015 illegal importation of (her) two dogs into Australia,” read the statement, released Tuesday.
Johnny Depp spoke about the incident during a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” interview back in September 2015.
“We were under the impression we had all the paperwork done for the dogs,” the Pirates of the Caribbean actor explained at the time. “We were there with the dogs in front of everybody.”
As fans may recall, the pair posted an apology video on YouTube in 2016 where Amber said she was “truly sorry” for not following the rules to declare the dogs.
Amber’s investigation is still ongoing, while Johnny’s alleged assault-related lawsuit will begin in July.
