Kim Kardashian has opened up about her relationship with Kanye West, including coparenting and what caused her to end their marriage.
They were married for 7 years
Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye West in 2021 after having been married for seven years.
The pair have four kids together: daughters North, 12, and Chicago, 7, and sons Saint, 9, and Psalm, 6.
Kim recently spoke about coparenting with West
In a recent appearance on the podcast Call Her Daddy, Kim shared the challenges of coparenting with West after host Alex Cooper asked her about it.
“It’s not easy. I mean, I raise the kids, you know, full-time. They live with me,” Kim said.
She encourages her kids to have a relationship with him
Despite the challenge, Kim said she still encourages her kids to have a relationship with their father. She said, “I welcome a great healthy relationship with my kids and their dad.”
“And I think he knows that. I push for it all the time, but I also protect them when it’s time for that. And it goes in waves and phases, and it’s a lot of work.”
She added she doesn’t ‘keep’ the kids from him
Kim also explained that she doesn’t intentionally ‘keep’ the kids from Kanye, a claim that he’s publicly made several times.
“I’ve never once done that,” she said.
She’d wake up to false claims
“It’s more of just the narrative that, like, I think it’s all good and we’re living our life and then I just wake up and there’s all these tweets about how I’ve kidnapped the kids, and I’m like, it’s not a kidnapping, it’s a divorce,” Kim went on.
“You know, we can still all be in each other’s lives and have group dinners.”
Kim opened up about her divorce
When asked whether there was a ‘final straw’ that caused her to end her marriage with West, Kim said it wasn’t just one moment, but rather ‘a lot of things that [she] wouldn’t deal with’.
Kim explained that West would do things like speak negatively about her family or air personal matters online.
She didn’t feel safe around him
Kim explained, “Just not feeling safe, you know, not even physically, just, like, maybe emotionally or even, you know, financially.”
“I would, like, come home, and we had, like, five Lamborghinis, and I’d come home and they’d all be gone if he was in an episode.”
He would apparently give away their cars
Kim went on, “And I’d be like, ‘Oh, wait. Where’s all our cars? Like, my new car?’ And it would be like, oh, he gave them away to all of his friends.”
She added that she would have ‘done anything to make it work’, but that ultimately, West was unwilling ‘to make changes’ that would’ve been ‘super healthy and beneficial’ to their marriage in her view.
She couldn’t stay in a toxic relationship
“It makes it really hard to continue on in a relationship that can be toxic,” Kim said.
“When you have kids, it’s definitely harder to leave than it is to stay. And it changes everyone’s life forever.”
