Last Week Tonight host John Oliver went on stage at the 2025 Emmy Awards to accept a trophy and had a few expletive words for the host Nate Bargatze.
Oliver went up to accept an award
John Oliver took the stage at the 2025 Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday, September 14, to accept the trophy for Outstanding Variety Series.
He jokingly took aim at the Emmy’s host Nate Bargatze while making his acceptance speech.
Bargatze implemented a new strategy this year
Nate Bargatze implemented a new strategy in this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony where he said he’d be donating $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America but he’d be deducing the money for every speech that exceeded the 45 second allotment.
He would also add to it if people took less time
Bargatze said he’d be removing $1,000 from his donation for every second spoken above the 45 second allotment in every speech.
He also said he’d be adding that amount for every second saved.
Oliver joked about this in his speech
In his speech, John Oliver thanked a short list of people, including his wife and two sons. He then alluded to how much money he added to the donation pot through giving a short speech.
He shouted expletives that were bleeped out during the CBS broadcast.
He playfully called out the amount of money
Oliver quipped, “F**k you Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you,” adding, “and you can add a f**k to the swear jar as well.”
The moment caused the crowd to then break into laughter, and it’s certainly not Oliver’s first time being censored on a broadcast.
It also happened last year
Oliver’s words were also censored during his speech last year. While accepting his trophy at the time, he said, “I also wanna thank—this is gonna be very silly—our dog.”
“We had the most fantastic dog and she was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us through two pregnancies and…”
He was starting to get cut off
As he began talking in the heartfelt moment, his speech started to get cut off as soft send-off music began playing.
To the music cut-off, Oliver reacted, “F**k you! I feel like Sarah McLaughlan right now.”
Oliver got to finish the speech
Despite this, Oliver still got to finish his speech, adding, “We had to say goodbye to her. She was an amazing dog and this isn’t just for her, it’s for all dogs. All dogs. You are very good girls and very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now!”
