Hannah Einbinder shouted a few words at the end of her award acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards ceremony 2025, one of which was bleeped on the live broadcast. She has since elaborated on her statements.
The Emmys were on Sunday
At the Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday, September 14, Hannah Einbinder accepted her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Ava Daniels in Hacks.
As the actress took the stage, she thanked the creators of the HBO Max series for ‘changing my life in every conceivable way.’
She had a few words to add
Einbinder went on in her acceptance speech to say that the Hacks creators changed her life ‘not just by giving me a great gig, but by being my friends and being my family.’
Her final words were bleeped on the broadcast as she said, “Finally, go birds, f*** ICE and free Palestine. Thank you.”
She was later asked to elaborate on it
The statement sparked a widespread reaction from viewers and the press alike, with people at home having not expected her to bring up these current issues.
Backstage at the Emmys, outlets asked Einbinder to elaborate on the bleeped out statement as well as her move earlier this week as she joined 1,200 other artists in signing a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions.
Einbinder explained her stance on it
“I thought it was important to talk about Palestine,” she said. “Because it’s an issue that’s very dear to my heart.”
“I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors right now in the north of Gaza, to provide care for pregnant women and for school children to create schools in the refugee camps.”
She felt obligated to talk about it
“And it’s an issue that’s really close to my heart for many reasons,” Einbinder added, per Deadline.
“I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the State of Israel, because our religion and our culture is such an important and long standing institution that is really separate to this sort of ethno-nationalist state,” she added.
Einbinder then explained the pledge she signed
The actress then elaborated on signing the pledge, saying she’s focused on ‘complicit institutions’ rather than individuals.
“In terms of the pledge, it’s like many movements, boycotting is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be to meet the moment, you know,” she said.
Those who signed the pledge are focusing on institutions
Einbinder added, “So the film workers for Palestine boycott does not boycott individuals, it only boycotts institutions that are directly complicit in the genocide.”
“So, it’s important to me, and I think it’s an important measure, and so I was happy to be a part of it.”
This is Einbinder’s first Emmy win
The actress has been nominated for an Emmy Award four times, but this was her first win. Her previous nominations were for each season of Hacks as Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
The HBO Max series was nominated for 14 Emmys this year.
