Social Media Doesn’t Interest Him
While the majority of Hollywood stars build their own personal brands on social media, Cera’s outlook is completely different. Social media doesn’t interest him at all.
It’s Not A Conscious Decision
“I guess it’s just something that I didn’t elect to do. Because everybody does it, it starts to feel like a big choice. But it’s just not interesting to me,” he said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter .
He Doesn’t Own A Smartphone
The 34-year-old actor also revealed that he doesn’t own a smartphone, which was a conscious decision for him. According to Cera, he feels like it would make him lose control of his waking life.
A Bad Experience
His aversion to cell phones started long before the rise of social media. He had a bad experience with a former best friend who was so engrossed in his Blackberry that he barely noticed Cera.
Lonely And Bored
“I had lunch with a friend of mine who was my best friend at the time, and he’d just gotten a Blackberry, and for the whole meal he was typing emails, and I was sat there lonely and bored,” he said.
People Resented His Choice
For a long time, people around him resented his choice to live phone-free. Now, they envy him, he says.
He Thinks Tweeting Is Lazy
In an interview with Time Out back in 2014, he also mentioned his distaste for social media, and Twitter, in particular. “I just don’t like spending my time that way. It’s just laziness.”
Dealing With Fame
Navigating the limelight hasn’t been easy for the comedian, who admits that he is a little uncomfortable with being famous. He explained that while he loves people, being constantly approached can be too much for him.
He’s A Sensitive Person
According to Michael, he is a sensitive person, and being constantly exposed to other people’s energies can be draining. “I’m not really cut out for that level of interaction with so many different types. I don’t have a strong enough personality for that.”
Arrested Development
The Canadian actor made his first major impact on American TV as George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. The hit show was on and off the screen for 15 years and its audience got to see Cera grow up before their eyes.
His Breakout Role
His breakout role came in the 2007 movie Superbad . Cera starred alongside Jonah Hill , who became one of his closest friends off-screen. The coming-of-age movie became a cult classic and catapulted Cera’s career in films.
Things Got Pretty Dark
While his career was thriving, Cera’s life behind the scenes wasn’t too bright. He revealed to GQ that he had a bit of a personal crisis because he wasn’t ready for the fame.
Living In LA
“I was living in L.A. without really understanding why I lived there or how I ended up there,” he said. “I had this very sudden exposure to people knowing who I was, which made everything even more confusing just on a day-to-day, existing basis.”
Friendship With Jonah Hill
While his Superbad fame came with challenges, it also led to many positive things, including his long-time friendship with Jonah Hill. The two remain friends to this day and continue to support each other’s projects.
Will There Be A Superbad 2?
The major success of the Apatow film has many fans wondering if there will ever be a sequel.
No Sequel Needed
Producer Judd Apatow has reportedly pitched a sequel story but the cast was “staunchly against” it. “I think that everybody is pretty staunchly against this, just because we feel good about the movie. It could only tarnish something that is a good memory,” Cera said in Esquire’ s Explain This.
Married Life
When it comes to his dating life, Cera is very private. He secretly tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Nadine, in 2018. The couple welcomed their first baby last year.
Being A Dad
According to Cera, being a new father has affected the way he approaches work. He’s no longer comfortable going away for long periods and would much rather be home with his family.
Family Time
“I think the only thing that it affects is that you just want to spend as much time with them as possible,” he told THR . “When you have kids, you want to be with your family. And you miss them a lot.”
