Lady Gaga attended the MTV VMAs on Sunday, September 7, but she only stayed for 15 minutes.
The award show saw a lot of celebrities
Taking place at the UBS Arena in New York on Sunday, September 7, the MTV VMAs this year were attended by a variety of music artists.
Awards were given to artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Rosé, Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes, and more.
Lady Gaga also received an award
Among those awarded was Lady Gaga, who had the crowd on their feet as she accepted the first award of the night for Artist of the Year.
But during her speech, she revealed that she’d have to be leaving soon.
The singer left 15 minutes into the event
Although she was the first to give a winning speech that night, the Bloody Mary singer said she had to leave the VMAs just 15 minutes after the ceremony began.
This may be confusing if you were watching
Her speech might have been confusing for those who watched the ceremony at home, since Gaga was seen performing later at the event in what MTV called ‘her VMA return’.
But that performance was actually prerecorded.
Why she left so early
Gaga said in her speech, “I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden.”
The singer was headlining her own Mayhem Ball concert 18 miles away from the VMAs venue that same night.
She was under a tight schedule
Both the VMAs and Gaga’s concert were scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET, but Gaga shared on Instagram that she’d be starting her concert at Madison Square Garden at 9:30 p.m that night, so she was on a pretty tight schedule.
Gaga still gave a beautiful speech
Despite having to make a quick exit, Gaga still made a thoughtful speech. She said, “Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world.”
“Being an artist is a discipline, a craft meant for reaching into someone’s heart, where it grows its roots, and reminding them to dream.”
She shared her love for fellow artists
The 39-year-old went on, “Being an artist is a responsibility to make the audience smile, dance, cry, release at any turn. It is a method of building understanding and celebrating community.”
Gaga also dedicated the award to her partner
The singer also honored her fiancé Michael Polansky, adding, “To my partner in all things Michael, creating this year with you was a beautiful, beautiful dream, and you have been my partner every step of the way,”
“I dedicate this to you, to my love,” she said.
