High School Musical icon, Vanessa Hudgens, posted a video on Instagram of herself drunkenly singing “Breaking Free” and just like that, we’re all 12 years old again wishing Troy Bolton was our boyfriend.
I’d be lying if I said getting over the “High School Musical” phase of my life was easy.
It was anything but easy…
“We’re All In This Together” was the ringtone on my Motorola Razr for longer than I’m proud to admit.
To this day, I still catch myself humming “You Are The Music In Me” while I wash dishes or fold laundry.
All that to say, the music of HSM was and still is infectious.
Don’t @ me.
It was truly comforting to learn that I’m not the only one that can’t let go of the old “HSM” tunes.
Vanessa Hudgens, AKA , “Gabriella Montez” recently shared a video of herself drunkenly belting “Breaking Free” at a karaoke bar.
Just to put things in perspective, it has been nearly 14 years since the release of “High School Musical”.
I know it feels like it was just yesterday that we were rocking out to the HSM Disney channel dance-along in our living rooms, but it’s been over a decade.
Vanessa has done A LOT with her career since then.
First of all, in the thick of HSM ‘s success, she released not one, but two albums: “Identified” and “V”, that featured tracks we all know and love such as, “Say Ok” and “Come Back To Me”.
Absolute bangers.
She was in a ton of Neutrogena commercials.
It’s a weird thing for me to admit, but these Neutrogena commercials were a staple in my childhood.
In 2011 she starred in the film “Beastly”.
She played the role of “Lindy” in this modern-day take on Beauty and the Beast — finding true love with a New York teenager under a curse that made him “hideous”.
In 2012 she starred in “Spring Breakers” alongside Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and James Franco.
This movie was really something…
That’s all I’m gonna say about it.
If you know, you know .
In 2016 she was in the live TV musical version of “Grease”, playing the part of “Rizzo”.
Honestly, she did an amazing job with this one.
Evidently, musicals are her calling.
Anyway, here’s Vanessa singing “Breaking Free” for probably the first time in years.
“Um. Here’s a really bad, aggressive, and totally sober version of breaking free. Yep. That happened lol it hurts my ears but also makes me laugh lol ♀️ the “ooo yeah”. Dear lord lol ♀️ ,” she captioned the post.
The only thing that would have made the video better is if Zac Efron were there to sing his parts too.
Can’t win ’em all, I guess.
Obviously, fans loved every moment of it.
Gabriella Montez has surpassed the legal drinking age and she is exercising her liberties — you go, girl! Live your best life!
“#GabriellaMontezForever” is going to be my next tattoo. Don’t even try and stop me.
It will be an ode to a time in my life when everything was good and just.
Seeing Vanessa “Breaking Free” after all these years is enough to make my entire week. But the fact that she was singing it at karaoke? ICONIC.
Doesn’t get any better than that, really.
Let us know what you thought of the drunk-version of “Breaking Free” sung by Vanessa Hudgens herself, nearly 14 years since the original “HSM” was released.
