Body shaming can have a significantly negative impact on people, but not Selena Gomez. Even though body shamers made her “sick,” she stood up for herself.
Body shamers commented on the Only Murders in the Building superstar’s body in the Emilia Pérez red carpet appearance at the French American Film Festival in Los Angeles on October 29.
Body shamers having a go at Gomez

Gomez responded
Embed from Getty ImagesGomez responded in the comments, posted by TMZ saying, “This makes me sick. I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a sick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
What is SIBO
Embed from Getty ImagesAccording to the Mayo Clinic, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), also known as blind loop syndrome, is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine — specifically types of bacteria that are not commonly found in that part of the gastrointestinal tract.
The past is in the past
Embed from Getty ImagesGomez used to be bothered and negatively affected by body shamers to the extent that she’d cry her eyes out. However, this is no longer the case as she no longer takes these body shaming attempts lightly and she now stands up for herself.
Gomez promoting acceptance

After the October 21 premiere at the Egyptian Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles, Gomez shared a picture of a breakout and wrote on October 22, “Even my skin is over me.”
Gomez is no stranger to hardships
Embed from Getty ImagesGomez was diagnosed with systemic lupus in 2013 and got a kidney transplant in 2017. She has been open about her health issues and in September, she told Vanity Fair that she unfortunately can’t have children. However, she is optimistic about surrogacy or adoption.
Benny Blanco being Gomez’s anchor

Self-love is the key
Embed from Getty ImagesGomez never hesitated to share messages promoting self-love to encourage others to do so. For example, in a video taken in February 2023, she said, “I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful.” She also went on about how everyone has their bad days, “but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself and my medications,” she said.
Gomez isn’t the only one
Embed from Getty ImagesMany stars have faced body shamers and they didn’t take it silently. For instance, in 2021, Natalie Portman faced speculation of being pregnant based on a photo of her wearing a blue tank top in Australia.
She wondered how “it’s still OK in 2021 for anyone to speculate and comment on a woman’s body shape whenever they want?”
Celine Dion faced body shamers, too
Embed from Getty ImagesCeline Dion has been body-shamed for being “too skinny.” She told Entertainment Tonight, “Is there anything wrong about my body? I’ve always been very thin. I do ballet. I do a lot of stretching and I work out because it helps my mind, body and soul.”
She ended her talk with words of wisdom, saying, “Last but not least, you can’t please everybody.”
