When we have a heated encounter with a stranger, we’re sometimes told that while they might have seemed like a jerk in that situation, it’s good to remember that we never really know what each other are going through.
And we can often find that this is particularly true for those who find themselves in the public eye. Because we’ve seen time and time again that stars who appeared to be living the high life had actually been experiencing some major personal struggles all along.
Of course, it should be someone’s personal prerogative as to how open they want to be with the world about their challenges in life but as we can see in the case of Salma Hayek, it can still be staggering to only hear about how dire their situations were after the dust has largely settled.
While speaking to *Variety*, the 54-year-old actress revealed that for the majority of 2020, she had been battling a severe case of COVID-19.
As Hayek detailed , she remained isolated in one room of her house for a seven-week period during the early days of the pandemic and had to be put on oxygen as the coronavirus came close to claiming her life.
All the while, the only allusion she made to this scary chapter in her life was an Instagram video depicting a series of clearly uncomfortable nasal swabs she took to test for the virus.
As she told Variety , “My doctor begged me to go to the hospital because it was so bad. I said, ‘No, thank you. I’d rather die at home.'”
Fortunately, that wasn’t the fate that would ultimately befall her, though she said she still hasn’t regained all of the energy she once had.
Nonetheless, she was able to return to work in April to shoot Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci , in which she plays a clairvoyant who was convicted as an accomplice in Patrizia Reggiani’s murder plot against her ex-husband, Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci.
Hayek described this role as an easy gig that didn’t take up too much time, making it a perfect way to return to acting in her current state.
As she put it, “I had started doing Zooms at one point, but I could only do so many because I would get so tired.”
She will also star in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard but this had already been filmed in 2019 and simply had its release date pushed back due to the pandemic.
