YouTube’s shadiest couple strikes again.
Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau are no strangers to scandals, both separately and together. That hasn’t stopped their popularity, though — with a combined subscriber count of over 24 million, these two are like the weirdest power couple ever.
People have been doubting whether they’re a real couple since they started dating, but they just added fuel on the fire by announcing their engagement on Tana’s 21st birthday.
Let’s back up a minute.

This whole thing started back at the end of April, when Tana posted a picture on her Snapchat story of her lying in a bed. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that it wasn’t her bed, and later deduced that it was Jake’s bed.
How? I have no idea. People on the Internet are scary.
At that point, the couple seemed to lean into it.

In a video uploaded to her channel called Mukbang In Bed With My Rebound Jake Paul Jake and Tana played off all the rumors swirling about their relationship. They said they were just friends, but acted suspiciously close during the video.
Jake posted a video on the same day with the same message.

Jake’s video further elaborated that they were just good friends, and the whole thing was them trying to prove how fast rumors spread on YouTube.
Tana adds that they should date “for clout,” which is what they seemed to do.
Since then, the Internet has been going crazy trying to figure out the truth.

Jake even introduced Tana to his mom in a vlog , but called her his “Girlfriend, thing, Internet girlfriend, real girlfriend, we smash sometimes.”
Just what every mother wants to hear.
Even Jake’s mom didn’t know what to think of their relationship.

She said that there was some “very real crushing” going on, but couldn’t determine if there was a real romantic connection or if Jake and Tana were just playing everyone for views.
Then came the matching tattoos.

Despite only celebrating their seventh week of dating, Jake and Tana decided to get matching tattoos. They got tally marks representing how many weeks they’d been together. Now that’s romance.
That brings us to now.

Or, more accurately, last weekend. It was Tana’s 21st birthday, and she threw a party to end all parties. A bus, a night out in Las Vegas, everything you could imagine a YouTuber doing for their birthday.
Obviously, Jake was there.

And it looks like having a maybe-fake, maybe-not, definitely-rich YouTube boyfriend can work out sometimes, because he gifted Tana with a Mercedes G-Wagon, even though she doesn’t have her license yet.
But the real present would happen later that night.

Tana shared these pictures on her Instagram story of a giant wedding cake reading “Will you marry me, Tana?” and a video of her showing off a huge diamond engagement ring.
She also tweeted out confirmation.

Of course, just because you tweet something doesn’t make it true. Fans were immediately suspicious of this news, considering the couple had only been “dating” around two months, and wouldn’t even confirm if it was real.
Tana insisted it was real.

She replied to a tweet asking if it was a joke with a simple “It’s not. I’m engaged. Holy [expletive].”
Not everyone believed her, and now people think they have proof.
It all lies in the video of the ring Tana shared.
Ira Weissman, founder of The Diamond Co. talked to E! News about how shady this video really is. “”Nothing is a sure thing without seeing the ring(s) up close, but everything about this little clip says ‘fake,'” he says.
He went on to explain the video tricks he believes Tana used.

“You can see the exaggerated sparkling light reflecting off of something in the bottom right of the frame in the beginning of the clip. This is exactly what you would want to use to try to enhance the sparkle of a simulated diamond to make it look like the real thing.”
Weissman is pretty convinced it’s not a real diamond.

“Plus, the glassy look of the very large center stone as it’s brought closer to the camera also points heavily towards it being a cubic zirconia.”
Fake diamond = fake engagement.
At least, it’s pretty likely it does, especially for a couple that doesn’t see a problem dropping the cash for a Mercedes birthday present for a girl who can’t drive.
It looks like this engagement might just be for the cameras. But then again, when it comes to Jake and Tana, what isn’t ?
