Olivia Rodrigo made a joke about underage drinking that has fans divided.
A clip of the “Drivers License” singer making light of the underage consumption of alcohol on The Late Late Show With James Corden has surfaced and sparked a debate about whether or not underage drinking is something that Rodrigo should be casually chit-chatting about on television.
Olivia Rodrigo recently appeared on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” and made a joke about underage drinking that hasn’t been sitting right with some viewers.
The “good 4 u” singer just turned 19 in February.
While speaking with James Corden, Rodrigo revealed that during her visit to the UK, she was able to legally order a drink.
As the legal drinking age there is 18-years-old.
Corden asked the “traitor” songstress if she had had a chance to visit any pubs while she was visiting London.
She admitted that it was thrilling to use her real ID for a change — insinuating that normally, she uses a fake one.
“I know that London is a favorite city of yours — that wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you can drink alcohol at 18, would it?” James asked.
“They asked for my ID as I was like, ‘Oh my god, I can show them my real ID! This is amazing!’” Rodrigo replied as the audience cheered.
To add insult to injury, Rodrigo had more than one fake ID.
She confessed that digging through her wallet filled with fake IDs, trying to find her “truly legal” one, was difficult.
Corden sarcastically asked the 19-year-old what it was like to drink alcohol for the very first time, to which she responded: “Yeah…first time! It was amazing, yeah!”
Seeing as Rodrigo’s fans are primarily underage, many of her fans have sounded off about her remark, suggesting it was irresponsible and unfair to former Disney stars who were ostracized for similar offences.
“Disney has loosened up so much over the years,” one Twitter user wrote, adding that former Disney stars were canceled for far less.
“Back in the day, this interview would’ve had Olivia sent to the mouse house gulag,” they added .
“Miley, Selena, Demi, and Vanessa would’ve been going through [it],” another tweeted, while someone else echoed, “I just know Miley, Demi, and Selena are p****d.”
As you might recall, former female Disney stars include Olivia’s High School Musical predecessor Vanessa Hudgens, Cheetah Girls star, Adrienne Bailon, and most famously Miley Cyrus were all reprimanded by Disney at various points in their careers.
Back in 2008, when Miley was 15-years-old, the “Hannah Montana” actress partook in a Vanity Fair photo shoot that was quickly labeled inappropriate.
Disney released a subsequent statement condemning the “Climb” singer before she then issued a public apology to her fans.
“I took part in a photoshoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic,’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” she said. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.”
