Former New York Jets player Nick Mangold passed away on Saturday October 25, as announced by the team.
He suffered complications
Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41, as announced by his former team, the Jets.
In a news release, the retired NFL star’s former team said that he died due to complications of kidney disease on Saturday, October 25.
They wrote beautiful words for him
Jets Chairman Woody Johnson said, “Nick was more than a legendary center.”
“He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.”
This is after Mangold had asked for a donor
Johnson added, “Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
The announcement came only 10 days after Mangold had reached out to his fanbase asking for a kidney donor.
The Jets had given an update on his health
The star’s former team had previously shared a health update on his behalf on Instagram on October 14.
They explained that his kidney issues had started almost a decade ago, with Mangold writing, “This isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with me and my health.”
He explained his history with the disease
Mangold went on, “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease.”
“After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant,” he went on.
Mangold asked for a donor
“I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time,” Mangold added.
“Unfortunately, I do not have any family able to donate at this time, so this is why I’m reaching out to you, our NY Jets community.”
He explained how people could donate
The athlete explained that those willing to donate a kidney would need to have type O blood, and would have to fill out a form from Columbia University Irving Medical Center using his full name and birthday, which he provided.
“I am deeply grateful to anyone that would consider donating,” he said at the time, expressing appreciation for his ‘amazing family, friends and community.’
Mangold was an NFL legend
Mangold played 171 games for the Jets and made seven Pro Bowl appearances before his retirement that came after the 2016 season.
The team inducted him into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022, and only last week, Mangold was announced as being among 52 Modern-Era players being considered for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
