Nick Jonas may be managing his type 1 diabetes really well now at 27, but back when he was 13, it almost put him in a coma.
He recently shared the details on the terrifying ordeal.
Nick Jonas has never been shy about sharing his struggles with type 1 diabetes.

If you didn’t know, diabetes is a chronic condition with no known cure that is caused by the pancreas producing little to no insulin.
The Jonas Brothers singer even documented his journey with a before and after pic on Instagram.

“13 years ago today I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” he began the caption. “The picture on the left is me a few weeks after my diagnosis.”
“Barely 100 pounds after having lost so much weight from my blood sugar being so high before going to the doctor where I would find out I was diabetic.”

“On the right is me now. Happy and healthy.”
He went on to accredit his good health to him prioritizing his wellness.
For this, he works out, eats healthy, and always keeps his blood sugar in check.
He finished the post with this: “I have full control of my day to day life with this disease, and I’m so grateful to my family and loved ones who have helped me every step of the way.”

“Never let anything hold you back from living your best life.” He then thanked his fans for all their love and support.
Now, Jonas has revealed a new faucet to the disease: how it almost killed him at the age of 13.
In a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado , the singer revealed the terrifying experience that almost resulted in him being in a coma.
“I was very close to a coma, like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital,” he said.

Since he was so young, he had to rely on his parents a lot to get him through the terrifying ordeal.
“I kept asking my parents—am I going to be okay?” Nick added.
“I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do. I was very scared—it’s a big life change.”

Thankfully, that ended up not being the case. He even discovered that the disease wouldn’t affect his life too much.
“I found out very quickly it’s a very manageable disease.”

“As long as you’re really diligent.”
Being diligent sadly does mean not being able to eat whatever he wants.

“I don’t have the luxury of eating whatever I want whenever I want anyway, because of my type 1 diabetes, so I have been conscientious about food for a long time,” he revealed in an interview with GQ .
“I do have guilty pleasures, though,” he said, which includes drinking from time to time.

If he ever indulges too much, he makes up for it the very next day by sweating it out in the sauna or in a really sweaty workout.
All of this dedication to a healthy lifestyle has led Nick to have one of the best celeb bodies around.
Including some of the best abs, if we do say so ourselves.
Nick’s experience with diabetes has even resulted in some musical inspiration.

For instance, it’s what inspired the lyrics behind the Jonas Brothers song, “A Little Bit Longer.”
“I was in Canada shooting ‘Camp Rock,'” he recalled. “And I was having one of those days where my blood sugar was a little bit out of control. I walked into a banquet room at the hotel where we were staying and saw a baby grand piano.”

“Nobody was in there, so I sat down and began to play. Fifteen minutes later, I called everybody into the room to come listen to the song. They all loved it. It was a really great feeling, because I had been feeling so down.”
While it really sucks that this JoBro has diabetes, we’re SO glad that he’s managing it so well!
Plus, that he continues to be an advocate for those fighting with the disease!
