Mindy Kaling has always been opinionated regarding body standards for women. She often wove it into her scripts for her show The Mindy Project and takes to social media to open up about her thoughts on the matter.
And now that it’s summer, a.k.a beach season, she’s taking to Instagram to show us how we can rock our bodies in a bikini — and it’s an extremely simple, yet powerful, message.
We love Mindy Kaling.
She’s always just been an inspiring and relatable boss at everything she does.
She’s always been herself and unapologetically open about body image, both on and off the screen.
Her show The Mindy Project was filled with relatable moments that have transcended the show’s end.
In the pilot of the first season, Mindy matter-of-factly says, “Do you know how hard it is for a chubby 31-year-old woman to go on a legit date with a guy who majored in economics at Duke?”
She’s also openly discussed body ideals in her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and in interviews.
In the book, Mindy states, “If someone called me chubby, it would no longer be something that kept me up late at night.”
“Being called fat is not like being called stupid or unfunny, which is the worst thing you could ever say to me.”
Being called “chubby” isn’t something that bothers her like it might other women.
She told The Guardian , “It’s OK, I identify as someone who is cute and chubby – that doesn’t mean I’m not worthy of love and attention and intimacy.’”
And now, she’s coming at us and hitting us with even more body positive TRUTH.
You can guarantee that you can have your donut in a bathing suit and eat it too after reading her message.
Over the weekend, Mindy Kaling shared a post of herself modeling the cutest bikinis on Instagram.
Attached to the photos was a simple, yet important body positive comment that is guaranteed to hype us all up for summer and slay in our bathing suits!
In the same post, she shared a video message of how she’s dealt with wearing bikinis.
She explained that she would visit her best friend in Hawaii when she was in college, and something that struck her about the state is how body positive they are.
No matter their body type, everyone wears a bikini in Hawaii.
That’s what helped boost Mindy’s confidence to fearlessly wear bikinis, even when she initially felt shy about her body.
She captioned the photo and video, “IDK who needs to hear this but…WEAR A BIKINI IF YOU WANT TO WEAR A BIKINI.”
“You don’t have to be a size 0.”
It’s really as simple as that, isn’t it?
She wanted to model some high bottomed bikinis to show off for The Gram, and she really looks like a summer goddess.
Where can I get these bikinis, STAT?!
Everyone loved Mindy’s message and applauded her for posting the pics.
Many celebs like model Tess Holliday, Kim Kardashian, Ayesha Curry, and Yara Shahidi gave their support and enthusiasm to The Office star.
Others were inspired by Mindy’s post to do the same.
And that is a big win for Mindy and for the body confidence movement.
She’s definitely living up to the quote from her book ‘Why Not Me?”
She says, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it. And if you don’t got it? Flaunt it. ‘Cause what are we even doing here if we’re not flaunting it?”
AMEN.
Mindy’s post really makes me want to do a little happy dance.
It’s so refreshing to see someone with a large platform help shape the rhetoric surrounding body positivity and help us all remember that all bodies are beach bodies.
Who’s ready to head to the beach with me and confidently rock a bikini, ASAP?! After work, of course.
