ICYMI, Mandy Moore’s ex-husband, Ryan Adams, made a public apology after six women, including Mandy, came forward, accusing him of emotional abuse and sexual misconduct in a New York Times exposé.
Since then, she has issued an additional statement responding to Ryan’s apology, calling him out for never apologizing to her privately.
Yikes.
Hold on to your hats! There’s a lot to unpack here.
First and foremost, let’s get you up-to-date on Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams’ turbulent history. The pair started dating in late 2007.
Although Ryan denied it — evidently, lying through his teeth.
“I can’t believe you guys would print lies like that. You said Mandy Moore and I were dating!” he told *Daily Intelligencer* at the time.
“Which we’re not. She’s single, and I don’t know why everyone thinks she has to be in a relationship.”
Despite Ryan’s denial of even being in a relationship with Mandy, the pair quietly tied the knot one year later.
Fast forward to 2015, just shy of their sixth wedding anniversary, they announced their split.
“It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways and both Mandy and Ryan are asking for media to respect their privacy at this time,” they said in a statement to Us Weekly .
In a 2018 interview with *Bustle*, Mandy described her marriage to Ryan as being “dark” and “lonely”/
“When I think back to that particular time period that we’re talking about … It was heavy. It was dark. It was confusing. It was lonely,” she said .
She explained that she felt like her relationship with Ryan was consuming her entire life.
“There was no room for me. There was no room for me to have anything else in my life,” she said .
And by February 2019, Mandy had opened up even more, accusing Ryan of psychological abuse.
In a New York Times exposé she said:
“Music was a point of control for him. He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician because you don’t play an instrument.'”
She explained that by belittling her and her dreams of being a successful musician, she felt like she was being blocked from evolving as an artist during a pivital time in her career.
“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s .”
In early 2020, Mandy spoke to the *New York Times* once again, stating: “He’s taken so much for so long from so many people. I can promise you he gets satisfaction being talked about in any capacity.”
“I just know that about him,” she added .

“I haven’t spoken to him in, I don’t know, two years or something, but just knowing him as well as I know him, he really gets off on being talked about.”
Six other women also came forward with similar stories about their experiences dating Ryan, to which he responded in June 2020 with a public apology.
“There are no words to express how bad I feel about the ways I’ve mistreated people throughout my life and career,” he said .
“All I can say is that I’m sorry. It’s that simple,” he went on. “This period of isolation and reflection made me realize that I needed to make significant changes in my life.”
“I’ve gotten past the point where I would be apologizing just for the sake of being let off the hook and I know full well that any apology from me probably won’t be accepted by those I’ve hurt.”
“I get that and I also understand that there’s no going back,” he concluded.
Mandy’s response to Ryan’s apology, however, was less than positive. Earlier this week, speaking with Hoda Kotb , she called him out for not apologizing to her personally.
“It’s challenging because I feel like in many ways I’ve said all I want to say about him and that situation,” she said.
She explained that she can’t speak for the other women who have come forward with their own allegations, but she herself, has not heard from Ryan.
“I am speaking for myself, but I have not heard from him,” she said.
She said that she isn’t even looking for an apology, but reaching out to her personally would certainly speak more volumes than making an online statement for everyone to see.
“And I’m not looking for an apology necessarily,” she said.
“But I do find it curious that someone would sort of do an interview about it without actually making amends privately .”
