Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has grown up before our eyes. After getting cast as Arya Stark on the hit HBO show at just the age of 11, it can be easy to forget that Maisie had a childhood that wasn’t what we saw on our TV screens. In a raw, emotional interview, Maisie has opened up about some struggles and trauma in her childhood and how it has effected her going forward.
Maisie recently was a guest on ‘The Diary Of A CEO’ podcast.
During the hour-long interview, Maisie opened up about her difficult childhood. “As a young child before the age of 8, I had a traumatic relationship with my dad,” she said , adding that it “really consumed a lot of my childhood. Ever since I can remember I really struggled with sleeping, and I think a lot of the traumatic things that were happening, I didn’t realize that they were wrong.”
“I would look around at other kids and wonder, ‘why don’t they seem to understand this pain or dread or fear? Where does this joy — when does that come for me?'”
Maisie explained she didn’t want to get into too much detail, as “it affects my siblings and my whole family,” but opted to tell a story about how, when she was 8 years old, a teacher asked if she was hungry, and what she had for breakfast. “We just didn’t have any breakfast,” Maisie responded, stating that they hardly ever did.
“They were asking the right questions,” Maisie revealed, as she started to cry.
“I had so many people who loved and cared about me so much, but I had never been asked the right questions where I could really say what was wrong,” Maisie went on . Maisie said after this questioning, Maisie’s parents were asked to come to the school.
“It was really, really hard because I still wanted to fight and say, ‘No! These things aren’t bad! You’re trying to take me away from my dad and that’s wrong!’” Maisie went on.
“Because I was like, indoctrinated in a way.”
But Maisie revealed that she’s able to keep a clear head about the subject and not blame herself. “If I wasn’t there it would’ve been someone else. It’s not because something is wrong with me that these things happened when I was a child.”
