On Sunday night at the 2025 Grammy Awards, Beyoncé received a Grammy for Best Country Album and it seems her husband was the happiest about the award.
The artist won Best Country Album and Album of the Year for her eighth album Cowboy Carter, but it’s during the time she was standing to receive the former that Jay-Z whispered something into her ear which got people thinking.
Beyoncé was introduced by Swift
The artist’s Best Country Award was introduced by Taylor Swift, who excitedly announced the win for Cowboy Carter.
Beyoncé used the album to dive into the Black roots of country music and the contributions from Black artists into building the genre which are often overlooked.
Jay-Z seemed proud of her
While Queen Bey was getting ready to get on stage and accept her award, her partner, rapper Jay-Z, seems to have known all along that she would win the Grammy, despite herself being shocked by it.
He whispered something into her ear
As the artist stood up to hug her husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy, Jay-Z seemed to lean over and whisper something in her ear, and fans started wondering what he might have said.
One lip reader has an idea
A lip reader, NJ Hickling, has provided their two cents on what the rapper may have whispered in Beyoncé’s ear before she went to the stage to make her speech.
According to Hickling who spoke to The Mirror, Jay-Z said exactly nine words to his wife.
Jay-Z knew his wife was a star
“Woah woah woah. Bout time! You’re a top girl,” is what Jay-Z whispered to Beyoncé according to the lip reader.
The artist swiftly made her way to the stage where she gave a heartfelt speech to younger artists.
Beyoncé wasn’t expecting the win
“Wow I really was not expecting this,” she began her speech. “I want to thank God, oh my God, that I’m able to still do what I love after so many years.”
She also added, “I’d like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted this album.”
The singer spoke about the genre
“We worked so hard on it. I think sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists. And I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about, and to say, ‘Stay persistent’,” she added.
Beyoncé made sure to encourage artists to pursue their goals without worrying about the potential boundaries of genre.
She dedicated the award to Linda Martell
Beyoncé also dedicated her award to one of the pioneers for Black musicians within the country music genre, Linda Martell, who also features on several songs in Cowboy Carter.
Martell was the first Black woman to perform solo at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
Beyoncé is a record holder
Beyoncé holds a pretty impressive record of being the most awarded artist in Grammy history, with 35 Grammy awards and 99 nominations to her name since being nominated for the first time in 2000 with her girl group Destiny’s Child.
She broke another record on Sunday
At the 2025 Grammys, Beyoncé also became the first Black woman to win a Grammy award for Album of the Year since Lauryn Hill’s win for her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999.
What a night!
