George Michael ’s ex-partner, Kenny Goss, is opening up about their relationship and the headline-making incident that led to the late pop star’s arrest in 1998.
Goss Did An Interview With The Radio Times
In a conversation with the Radio Times ahead of the launch of a new two-part documentary titled George Michael: Outed , the 64-year-old Texas native revealed never-before-known details about that fateful day when the former Wham! singer’s sexuality was exposed in a very public way.
What Happened In 1998

Back in April 1998, George was caught engaging in a sexual act by an undercover police officer in a public toilet in Beverly Hills.
Arrest And Outing
The incident led to his arrest and a public outing of his sexual orientation, which he had chosen to keep private before then.
George And Kenny Were In A Relationship During His Arrest

Kenny, who was in a relationship with George from 1996 to 2009 (including the time he was arrested), described the aftermath of the incident.
The Aftermath

He talked about going to the police station and finding out how much George’s bail was, and then heading to the bank to get the money.
The Media Frenzy Following The Arrest

He also recalled his ex-partner’s emotional state following his arrest as the media stalked them for information, complete with helicopters hovering above their house.
‘Everything Would Be OK’

“I was just trying to understand the situation and reassure George that everything would be OK,” Kenny said.
‘He Was Stressed Out’

“He was stressed out. He took to his bed, then the next morning, we got up, and I told him, ‘Yep, still a few helicopters up there,’” he added.
Kenny Never Stopped Worrying About George
From then on, he never stopped worrying about the Careless Whisper hitmaker.
“From the moment he was arrested, when he wasn’t with me, there was always a little bit of me, thinking, is he going to be OK?” he said.
‘He Might Get Into Trouble Again’
“I was always worried about what might happen, that he might get into trouble again,” Kenny continued.
He Stood By Him
Kenny and George would stay together for 11 more years after the infamous incident.
Their Breakup And George’s Last Years
Even after they broke up in 2009 and up until the singer died on Christmas Day in 2016 from heart disease, the two remained friends. Kenny was in touch with him until his last years.
Why Did They Break Up?
Their breakup was caused in part by their problems with alcoholism and substance abuse.
Kenny Always Cared About George’s Well-Being
He was privy to his ex’s life and always looked out for his well-being.
‘He Was A Tortured Soul’
“I felt so much for him. He was a tortured soul,” he said. “When I talked to him in later years, I always closed by saying, ‘We all love you, remember that. You have a lot of people that love you.’”
One Of Their Last Conversations
He recalled talking to the Father Figure singer not long before he died.
How He Wanted To Be Remembered
He said George asked him how he would be remembered by the public, and he answered the question himself by saying, “I hope it’s my songwriting.”
‘A Kind Man Who Made A Difference’
However, Kenny also wanted his former lover to be remembered as “a kind man who made a difference.” He said he’d had a positive effect on him because of his generosity.
His Positive Effect On Kenny
He explained that he came a better person because of what George taught him about “how you should help other people.”
