The Gold Digger rapper, who recently made headlines with his wife after an outfit stunt at the 2025 Grammys, shared that he was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 whilst he was still married to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian.
However, he has since found out that he was misdiagnosed after his current wife, Bianca Censori, asked him to revisit the doctor’s.

West has referred to his condition before
The rapper has previously spoken about his mental health condition, referring to it as a “superpower” in his 2021 track Yikes.
He also revealed in the 2022 documentary series Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy that he was gaining weight due to medication he was taking to manage symptoms.
He later found out he was misdiagnosed
West claimed in a more recent interview that he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, speaking in an episode of Justin Laboy’s The Download.
“They call it specifically bipolar, they put that on me they I said it so I put it on the album….” he shared.
West visited a doctor
“I went to this doctor, one that works with Justin Bieber, I’m not even going to name other names and stuff,” the rapper began explaining.
He explained that Bianca Censori, whom he married in 2022, was the one who urged him to see a doctor.
West shared what Censori said
“My wife [Bianca Censori] took me to do that because she said: ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar. I’ve seen bipolar before’,” he said.
“She’s educated – so she says: ‘I’ve seen bipolar before’, and I’ve come to find it’s really a case of autism that I have.”
West linked his autism to a movie
The rapper went on to link his experience with autism to the four-time Oscar-winning 1988 movie Rain Man.
The movie portrays a car dealer (played by Tom Cruise) finding out that his father died and left his fortune to his autistic brother (played by Dustin Hoffman) whom he didn’t even know existed before his father’s death.
He shared his thoughts with Laboy
West explained, “I’ve come to find out it’s really a case of autism that I have and autism takes you to a Rain Man thing where you’re like ‘Oh man I’m going wear this Trump hat because I like Trump in general and then when people tell you to not do it you just get on that one point.”
West said he likes to defy people
“That’s my problem when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way just because,” the rapper said, explaining that he likes to go against people’s expectations.
He also added that his friends often find it difficult to deal with him.
He’s not on medication anymore
“I haven’t been taking the medication since I found out it wasn’t bipolar, that wasn’t the right diagnosis,” West said after being asked if he was still on medication.
West shared that he manages his autism using things that don’t halt his “creativity” instead.
The rapper has recently made headlines
West is no stranger to making headlines, having caused a ruckus only last week with his wife Bianca Censori as she showed up to the 2025 Grammy Awards in nothing but a sheer dress.
Since then, a source close to West has commented on the move, saying it was part of Kanye’s “art.”
They left as fast as they came
The couple were only there for the red carpet, with the insider adding, “He [West] turned up, made headlines around the world and left. No one told him what to do and even if they had, he wouldn’t have listened.”
“Ye always planned to do the red carpet and leave – he’d never sit through the Grammys because it’s so dull and boring,” they added.
