‘Jeopardy’ Host Ken Jennings Stuns Fans With Brutal Game Ruling

For many, out of all of the game shows, Jeopardy is one of the trickiest. Known for its difficult trivia and fast-paced timing, let’s just say, the game show has a reputation for bringing together some especially smart cookies.

With that said, there was one decision from host Ken Jennings last Wednesday that many viewers didn’t find impressive — and ended up losing one contestant thousands of dollars.

It all started with what seemed like a standard question but ended in a lot of controversy.

It all began with a seemingly ordinary question-and-answer

Contestants Dana Keane, Isaac Hirsch, and the returning champion Kelly Proulx were given a question from the “Waterfalls” category for $2,000.

Ken read the description of the waterfall, saying, “A Yosemite fall with a wispy ribbon of water that flutters in the air like a diaphanous cloth bears the name of this marital wear.”

Like like most Jeopardy rounds, this was a straightforward case of matching the word with its description — or so it seemed.

One answer was rejected on a technicality that many found unfair

Kelly was ready with her answer, buzzing in and saying, “What is Bridalveil Falls?” However, that wasn’t good enough for the 50-year-old game show host.

Ken rejected Kelly’s answer because she had added an “s” to the word “fall” when the correct answer was “Bridalveil Fall.”

“No, I’m sorry. It’s actually Bridalveil Fall, so we couldn’t take that. It is, ‘What is a Bridalveil?’ he told her. Losing those points was such a major blow that Kelly couldn’t recover from in the game.

One rejected answer created a devastating losing streak

Adding insult to injury, Kelly’s rejected answer created a domino effect that left Kelly, the returning champion, falling behind by the end of the first round.

In last place, Kelly had $3,600 while Dana had $3,900. Isaac was in first place with $4,000. In an instant, Kelly went from the top to the bottom over pluralizing one word that could have changed everything for the contestant.

She had a brutal loss

Kelly ended the game with a low $8,000 while Isaac won with a whopping $19,185 at the end of the episode.

Fans across social media began to note the unusual ruling by Ken, which led to social media posts expressing anger over the questionable decision. Fans felt like Kelly’s answer should have been accepted.

Fans were furious all over social media

The episode may have been over, but the upset had just begun when fans across social media voiced their disappointment over Ken’s call on Kelly’s answer.

“Ready to individually fight the #Jeopardy judges for ruling ‘Bridalveil Falls’ wrong because of the extra ‘s’ that was not germane to the clue. being pedantic to that degree is disgusting and negatively affects the game,” Nate Rathjen wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Others also chimed in on the “unfair” decision, many noting that it was making the glamour of the game fizzle for them.

There’s even a Reddit thread dedicated to the juicy Jeopardy gossip

People were so fired up over Ken’s choice that they created a thread to discuss how it was the wrong call.

“If the clue only required you to say ‘Bridalveil,’ why does it matter if Kelly said ‘fall’ or ‘falls’ after? People call it ‘Bridalveil Falls’ all the time, including the National Park Service! Guess it doesn’t really matter since nobody got Final Jeopardy right but I’d still be pretty frustrated if I were her,” mccracal wrote on Reddit.

“Agree 100%. They did her dirty on that one,” TGISeinfeld added in response to mccracal.

A few people found Ken to be in the right

While most people have been pretty annoyed with Ken, fans have stepped up to defend him, and even try to explain the game show host’s decision.

“I think people are getting thrown off by Ken butchering the explanation of the ruling,” tributtal wrote on Reddit.

“The clue was about the garment, not the fall. It would have been ruled incorrect even if she had said ‘fall.’ Including something after ‘bridal veil’ is what made it wrong,” they added.

While, this logic didn’t quite convince other Reddit users, it added another layer of the conversation.

Ken admitted it was a ‘harsh ruling’

While the game show host didn’t go as far as saying he was in the wrong for his decision, he did admit to it being “a very harsh ruling” following the social media outcry from angry fans.

This may not be enough to calm some viewers’ fury, but it serves as one of the latest controversies in the Jeopardy world, and maybe even a sore spot for some.
