Mom-of-one Jennifer Lawrence got candid about the difficulties of parenthood in a new interview.
The 32-year-old Oscar-winning actress had a conversation with Viola Davis for Variety ’s Actors on Actors series, where she revealed rare details about her life as a new mother. The Hunger Games star has a son named Cy, born early this year, with her art-dealer husband Cooke Maroney. Though she’s usually very secretive about her personal life, she opened up to Davis about the guilt and fear she constantly feels as a first-time mom. Read the details below.
‘Scariest Thing In The Entire World’

Lawrence, who is currently starring in the psychological drama Causeway , talked about the heavy emotions she felt while doing the movie and how she experienced a similar fear when she had her baby. She revealed that starting a family was the “scariest thing in the entire world” and she was so afraid that she would mess it up.
The actress began Causeway before she got married in 2019, and then the project was waylaid by the pandemic. Filming resumed while she was pregnant with Cy.
Second-Guessing Herself Constantly
“Every day of being a mom, I feel awful. I feel guilty,” Lawrence told Davis. “I’m playing with him and I’m like, ‘Is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We’re outside. What if he’s cold? What if he’s going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this developing your brain enough?’”
Davis Had Her Own Motherhood Story, Too
Davis had an interesting story herself about motherhood. The Oscar-winning Fences actress has a daughter named Genesis with husband Julius Tennon, and she revealed that she accidentally locked her in the car once. They were headed to Target on a hot day and she was feeling stressed with all the things she needed to do.
When she closed the door, she realized she had locked her keys inside with her daughter. “I threw myself on the concrete, Jennifer,” she said. “I screamed. You would think I was in a Greek tragedy.” She ended up calling 911 and having her daughter taken out of the car.
Car Seat Blunder
In reply to Davis, Lawrence recalled a car story of her own. She said she once forgot to buckle her son into his car seat. “He was just teetering around, just flying. OK, great! Good to know that we all almost killed our kids,” she hilariously added.
