Younger people have always been sick of hearing advice from their elders . But some of this advice is good advice, the kind of stuff that only makes sense when you’re older .
When it comes to longevity, it’s absolutely worth following the example set by older people — after all, most of us want to live long lives.
Actor James Brolin, who you’ll hardly believe is 82, has shared a few secrets to staying youthful in old age.
James Brolin is a Hollywood legend.
Born Craig Kenneth Bruderlin in 1940, Brolin has been acting since the early ’60s. He still regularly appears in TV and movie roles in his 80s. Brolin’s son, Josh, is a successful actor in his own right.
He’s looking pretty good for an 82-year-old.
Brolin told People that he owes at least some of his youthful vigor to surfer Laird Hamilton.
“I’m at a [dinner] party at a friend of mine’s, and one night Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese [were] there,” Brolin said of their chance encounter.
It was an opportunity to switch things up.
Brolin said he’d been in a rut lately and was willing to try something else. So when Hamilton invited him out to the water, Brolin took the opportunity and learned a new way to work out.
He now has an aquatic workout plan.
While he may have been inspired by a surfer, Brolin isn’t hitting the waves to go surfing. Instead, he takes part in an underwater workout routine with weights. It helps keep him in good shape while being a low-impact, low-risk activity.
He started to look better.
“Everything started to change. I just started to look better,” Brolin said. “Body, face, eyes, thinking and therefore proving the old, boring thing that exercise really works.”
He also uses a sauna at home in an effort to flush out any toxins.
He also credits his wife.
Brolin first met actor and singer Barbra Streisand in the mid ’90s. The two have now been married for 24 years. In a separate interview with People , Brolin discussed the secrets of their successful marriage.
It’s all about knowing yourselves.
“Being understanding where your rages and your fire comes from,” Brolin said. “Knowing that they will calm down and you can negotiate. I don’t think anyone’s immune to that no matter how great lovers look over at that table,” Brolin said.
He got some great advice earlier in his career.
Brolin said that his Hotel co-star Connie Sellecca gave him this piece of advice in the ’80s: “Call a shrink six months before you’re married and both of you sit there with him. So that once you’re married, if you ever need a tune-up, it’s not an issue with one of the people.”
Brolin’s happy and healthy at the ripe old age of 82.
It’s truly gratifying to read about someone finding new ways to improve themselves and enjoy life in their old age. For James Brolin, it seems like just about everything in his life is in balance.
