Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have broken up after a nearly eight years long on-and-off relationship.
They first started dating in 2017
Insider sources have said that the couple’s split “feels final this time,” as per People.
Johnson, 35, and Martin, 48, were first seen dating in 2017 and although they were photographed together two weeks ago on May 16 and before that, in January, it seems they have now called it quits.
They were actually engaged for ‘years’
The actress and the Coldplay lead singer first sparked engagement rumors back in 2020, with an insider revealing four years later in March 2024 that they had actually been engaged for “years.”
But it was also emphasized that at the time, they were “in no rush to get married.”
Breakup rumors started circulating in August 2024
Only five months after a source broke the news that Johnson and Martin had been engaged for years, breakup rumors started circulating, in August 2024.

At the time, a representative for Johnson denied the claims, saying that the actress and Martin were still “happily together.”
But no relationship is without its bumps in the road
Prior to this in June 2024, a source said that the pair had their “ups and downs, but now they’re definitely back on.”
They were doing better in August
Around the same time the actress’ rep shut down breakup rumors in August, a source also said, “Sure, they’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”
Johnson previously spoke about life around Martin’s kids
The actress once spoke about her relationship with Martin’s children whom he shares with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
She told Bustle in March 2024, “I love those kids like my life depends on it.” She added, “With all my heart.”
She also shared that she loves watching Martin perform
At the time, the actress also shared that she was a big fan of Martin’s performances with Coldplay, saying, “I don’t know. I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it.”
“I feel like, I don’t know… I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing,” she added.
Johnson recently also spoke about relationships
In an interview published on Wednesday, June 4, Johnson also discussed relationships as her newest romance movie Materialist is set to release in theaters June 13.
She said, “For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world. When people should get married. Divorce is bad.”
“All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad?” she said. “Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”
