Gabby Petito’s heartbreaking case is back in the spotlight

The case is back in the spotlight after American Murder: Gabby Petito hit Netflix.
Petito was killed by her boyfriend Brian Laundrie in 2021, and with the new doc out, her heartbreaking story is making headlines again.
Netflix shared so many details about Gabby’s final weeks

The three-part documentary dives into everything that happened in the weeks before her death.
Unsettling police bodycam footage raised some serious concerns

One part of the series shows police bodycam footage from Utah—officers stopped the couple after someone reported seeing Laundrie slap Petito.
Gabby left behind a heartbreaking letter that’s filled with love and pain

Before the docuseries even came out, the FBI released a heartbreaking letter Petito wrote to Laundrie not long before she died. In it, she begged him to stop calling her names.
At one point, she wrote: “Just please stop crying and stop calling me names because we’re a team and I’m here with you.” She went on: “Yes, I can be a child sometimes I know, but it’s ‘cause you give me this energy and I just love you too much. Like so much it hurts.”
Gabby’s own words revealed her struggle

She continued: “So, you in pain is killing me. I’m not trying to be negative, but I’m frustrated there’s not more I can do.”
But the AI-generated voice sparked backlash from viewers

The documentary has stirred up some controversy, especially because it uses an AI-generated voice to read from her journals, making it sound as if Gabby herself is reading them.
A lot of viewers found it unsettling, calling it “creepy” and “uncomfortable.” One Reddit user said: “I hated it personally. I’m sure her family approved it and it may have been really meaningful to them.”
Netflix faces criticism over AI in true crime

Another viewer felt the same way, writing: “Yeah, made me uncomfortable. As soon as I heard it, I went to Reddit to see if anybody else had the same reaction haha.”
They added: “Netflix has been caught using AI in their true crime stuff before, so I’m not really surprised. It’s just gross that they have no shame in doing this sort of thing.”
