Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have always managed to keep their relationship on the DL. So private, in fact, you might’ve forgotten by now, or not even realized they were an item.
But Eva recently revealed why she likes to keep her personal life just that: Personal .
If you’ve ever gotten a look at Eva Mendes’ social media, then you probably already know that she uses it quite sparingly.
Understandably, she seems to limit how much access her followers have to her personal life.
Which is — quite honestly, the smartest way to use social media if you’re concerned about privacy.
There is absolutely no sign of her husband, Ryan Gosling, or their two daughters, anywhere on her Instagram feed.
And she recently revealed that she plans to keep it that way!
For those of you that are foggy on the details of Eva and Ryan’s relationship, here’s some background info:
The pair met back in August 2011 , while filming The Place Beyond the Pines together.
From there, their professional relationship quickly turned into a romantic one.
Initially, they weren’t shy about flaunting their budding romance for the paparazzi.
They were seen holding hands and hugging at Disneyland , just one month after meeting each other.
In 2012, things were starting to get serious!
They introduced each other to each other’s respective parents, spent family holidays together, and made a ton of public appearances holding hands for the paparazzi.
In September 2014, they welcomed their first daughter, Esmeralda.
A couple of months later, Eva opened up in an interview with The Violet Files about some of the struggles of motherhood , saying :

In 2015, while promoting his film “The Big Short”, Ryan gushed about his and Eva’s relationship.
She’s “the person I’m supposed to be with,” he said . “There’s nothing else I’m looking for.”
In April 2016, they surprised fans by welcoming their second daughter, Amada Lee.
A source revealed in a statement to People that Eva “just hasn’t ever wanted anyone beyond her close friends and family knowing more than they had to.
And Ryan is certainly private and always has been.”
Since having their two children, Eva and Ryan have been more private than ever, with no sign of that changing anytime soon.
Late last week Eva replied to a fan’s comment on Instagram, revealing the reason why she keeps her family-life as under-the-radar as possible.
“You look amazing, Eva!,” a fan commented.
“Just wanted to say how much it means to us fans to be able to talk to you and how great is that unlike many other celebrities you acknowledge us. So thank you! p.s. wouldn’t mind an appearance by Ryan on this page .”
“Thank you for saying this. I take so much joy from connecting to other women. It means so much to me. Even just a quick exchange,” Eva replied.
“I struggle with Social Media but I love the constant connection with women. I try to post responsibly and I try to make sure I don’t portray myself in a way that makes other women feel bad.”
“Instagram can be hurtful in that way. Like with this picture, this is actually a campaign shot and it was retouched. So I want women to know that,” she continued.
“I want women to know it takes a lot for me to look this way and that I struggle with food among many other things.”
“So thank you again for your comment and feel free to call me out on [expletive] if you see it.”
“As far as Ryan, I’ll only post flash backs of things that are already ‘out there’ (like pics from movies we did or stuff like that),” she wrote .
“My man and kids are private.”
“That’s important to me so thanks for getting that. Have a beautiful day. Sending so much love,” she concluded .
So, we have no reason to suspect that Eva will be posting any unreleased photos of her and Ryan, unfortunately.
But good for her to valuing her family’s privacy so much — it’s a rare thing to see amongst families in Hollywood!
