Emma Stone says she believes in aliens as she explains it’s ‘narcissistic’ to believe we’re alone in the universe.
She’s currently promoting her new movie
Stone shared her thoughts on aliens at the Venice Film Festival where her new movie Bugonia premiered last week.
The 36-year-old said she was inspired by scientist and astronomer Carl Sagan, who felt that believing we were alone in the ‘vast expansive universe’ was ‘narcissistic’.
Aliens are at the center of the movie
In Bugonia, Stone plays a CEO of a major pharmaceutical company called Michelle Fuller, who gets kidnapped by conspiracy theorists who believe she’s an alien pretending to be human as part of a plan to destroy Earth.
The actress was asked about believing in aliens
Stone is a critically acclaimed actress with an Oscar for Best Actress that she won for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in 2023’s Poor Things.
At a press conference in Venice, the La La Land star was asked if she believed there was an ‘ultimate intelligence looking down on us’.
The actress mentioned Carl Sagan
Stone replied, “I don’t know about looking down on us, but one of my favorite people who has ever lived is Carl Sagan and I fell madly in love with his philosophy and science and how brilliant he is.”
She said thinking we’re alone is ‘narcissistic’
The actress went on, “He very deeply believed [that] the idea that we’re alone in this vast expansive universe – not that we’re being watched – is a pretty narcissistic thing,” per The Guardian.
“So, yes, I’m coming out and saying it: I believe in aliens.”
The director also shared his thoughts on the movie
Director Yorgos Lanthimos shared his thoughts on Bugonia, which is a remake of the 2003 Korean film Save The Green Planet!
He said he wouldn’t call the movie ‘dystopic’, adding, “If anything, this film says this is happening now.”
He explained why it’s more current than people think
Lanthimos went on, “Humanity is facing a reckoning very soon, people need to choose the right path in many ways otherwise I don’t know how much time we have – with technology, with AI, with wars, and [with] the denial of all these things, how desensitized we’ve become to them.”
