Judge Frank Caprio, who went viral on TikTok and is beloved for his kindness and leniency, has died at the age of 88 from pancreatic cancer.

According to his Instagram page, the judge passed away on Wednesday, August 20.
The official statement noted that he ‘passed away peacefully’ after a ‘long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.’
He was known for his kindness
Judge Caprio went viral on TikTok for his kindness when handing out sentences in the courtroom.
Clips from his time as a Providence Municipal Court Chief Judge in Rhode Island and the reality television show Caught in Providence showed his leniency and compassion for others.

The statement announcing the devastating news on his Instagram read, “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond.”

The statement went on, “He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.”

Judge Caprio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023 and would share updates on his health with his followers on Instagram.
The beloved judge had also published a memoir in February titled Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge.
The governor of Rhode Island ordered mourning
The compassionate judge is being mourned by many in Rhode Island and around the world.
Dan McKee, the governor of Rhode Island, ordered that all flags at state agencies and buildings be flown at half-staff until his burial.
