No one would have imagined this The Queen’s Gambit star suffered bullying as a teenager! She credited her parents for helping her through that difficult stage in her life despite it leading to her dropping out of school to become an actress.
Growing Up Bullied
During an interview on the Thursday episode of The Drew Barrymore Show , Taylor-Joy revealed details of her childhood. We know her as a confident and talented actress, but this star didn’t grow up feeling this way.
Taylor-Joy tells us how she was bullied while growing up, leading her to drop out at sixteen. Thankfully, she was able to go through this ordeal with the help of her loving parents.
In a 2020 interview, Taylor-Joy shared how this event has affected how she views herself. Despite starring in movies as a love-interest, the actress has never really felt beautiful enough to star in these movies.
Acting Helps Her Feel Valued
The Golden Globe winner didn’t let these past occurrences put her down as she informs Barrymore. She spoke about acting in The Menu, a horror-comedy directed by Mark Mylod.
This isn’t the first major movie she has starred in. Taylor-Joy explained why she turned to acting, starting with her breakout role as the lead in Robert Eggers’s 2015 period horror film The Witch which earned her some awards.
‘The Menu’ Is A Horror-Comedy Flick

The Menu came out last weekend to critical acclaim and Taylor-Joy stars alongside veteran actor Ralph Fiennes and fellow British star actor, Nicholas Hoult. The Horror-Comedy follows a young couple (Taylor-Joy and Hoult) on an adventure to an exclusive restaurant run by an eccentric chef (Fiennes).
Becoming A Movie Star
The Peaky Blinders star graced the cover of British Vogue last April, speaking on the struggles of fitting in and how tough it was for her to move to London as a child.
She also features in the new December 2022/ January 2023 issue for Harper’s Bazaar UK .
The actress visited Jimmy Fallon’s show and reminisced on their MET Gala encounter where she said he saved her life.
