The photo showed the Salt actress performing her role as a refugee envoy for the United Nations. The image showed Jolie posing alongside a small boy.
With the image, the actress shared she was stepping down from her role at the U.N. refugee agency. The 47-year-old actress has been working with the U.N. for over two decades. However, Jolie shared she wanted to work more closely with the people who were directly affected.
She Penned A Heartfelt Message To Her Followers
The Maleficent actress took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message with the throwback photo. The actress announced she was stepping down after working for the UN Refugee Agency for over 20 years. Jolie added she believes in all they do and the way the UN saves people’s lives through emergency relief.
The Wanted actress continued that the UNHCR has amazing people who make a difference in people’s lives daily. Jolie also wrote she has great admiration for refugees. Hence, she was dedicating her life to working with them. The actress also revealed henceforth, she will work with those who were directly affected by conflicts. Jolie believes doing this gives them a greater voice.
UNHCR And Jolie Released A Joint Statement
Jolie and the United Nations refugees agency later released a joint statement that same day. The UN wrote that the actress will still work. She will not engage in bigger humanitarian and human rights issues. The Challenging actress started working with the U.N. Refugee agency in 2001. In 2012, Jolie was appointed the special envoy. She was also among the organization’s ambassadors most high-profile.
The U.N. also shared that Jolie carried out over 60 field missions. This was to bear witness to stories of hope, resilience, and suffering. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees revealed she supports Jolie’s decision.
