Jane Fonda raised a generation of millennials and boomers with her movies but regretted her choices in raising her three children – Vanessa Vadim, Mary Luana Williams, and Troy Garity. As she contemplates the end of her life, the Barbarella actress reminisces on life as a mother battling cancer.
Worried About Having Regrets
Fonda opened up to CNN interviewer, Chris Wallace, about the many things she got wrong as a mother to Vanessa, Mary Luana and Troy. Rather than worry about life after death or death itself, Fonda stresses about leaving the world with regrets.

The Monster in Law alum clarified her stance, saying she didn’t wish for death as she still had much to do – after all, she recently starred in a movie but didn’t want its thoughts to cripple her.
Fixing Her Regrets
Fonda is glad she realized her parenting mistakes before it was too late and has spent the last few years correcting them. She said,
Vanessa Vadim
The actress gave birth to Vanessa in 1968, three years after marrying French movie director, Roger Vadim. She’d named the infant after fellow actress and social activist, Venessa Redgrave (Fonda was an avid activist in her youth.)
Fonda’s Second Marriage
The actress separated from Vadim in 1970 but officially got divorced from him in 1973. She wasted no time getting married to politician and social justice activist, Tom Hayden.
Fonda’s Second Child – Troy Garity
Fonda was three months pregnant with her second child, Troy, during her second wedding ceremony. In July 1973, she delivered the actor at an L.A. hospital.
Honoring Another Activist
Like his older sister, Troy’s middle name, O’Donovan, is a tribute to Irish revolutionary, Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa.
Lulu Williams
Mary Luana ‘Lulu’ Williams is Fonda and Hayden’s unofficially adopted daughter whom they welcomed in 1982 as a teenager.

All of Fonda’s children followed her career path from entertainment to activism. She was right in saying they all turned out fantastic!

Lulu became an activist like her adoptive mother and wrote a book about growing up as Fonda’s daughter.
Vanessa Vadim The Cinematographer
Vadim, 54, is a movie director and cinematographer like her father and is famous for her movies, The Quilts of Gee’s Bend (2002) and Jane Fonda in Five Acts (2018). Although her 9-5 is behind the camera, Vadim is also an activist.
Troy Garity The Actor
Garity became an actor like his mother and earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the 2003 movie, Soldier’s Girl.
Fonda In The 2020s
Having succeeded with her children and career, Fonda now acts feel-good movies for an older audience. Her latest movie, 80 for Brady celebrates adult women friendships and she shot it with her real-life besties – Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field.
Book Club Returns
Fonda’s 2018 movie, Book Club returns for a sequel this Mother’s Day with its original cast – Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen, and Diane Keaton.

Not The End Yet
With all these projects lined up, it’s definitely not the end for Fonda. She still practices activism even at 85.
