Florence Pugh has shared that she’s come across all types of intimacy coordinators on her job as an actor, saying some of them were ‘fantastic’ and others were ‘so weird’.
She opened up about it in a recent interview
Speaking on the Louis Theroux Podcast on Tuesday, November 11, Pugh shared her thoughts on intimacy coordinators.
In case you didn’t know, this is a person whose job is to be ‘an advocate’ and ‘a liaison between actors and production’ in intimate scenes, per the SAG-AFTRA website.
Pugh has had experience with the good and bad
The actress said she has ‘had good ones and bad ones’, explaining, “I did a lot of my sex scenes before that was even a job.”
“I am quite confident, quite happy in my skin and I’ve always been able to make sure that I’m heard.”
But sometimes things were uncomfortable
Although the actress has had good experiences with intimacy coordinators, not all of them were so great.
“That being said … there are plenty of things I remember that were completely inappropriate – to be asked to do that, to be directed in that way,” she added.
She’s learned more about the job
The Oppenheimer star explained that her view on the job of an intimacy coordinator has changed over the years.
“But my view is changing about it as well, because I’m now having fantastic experiences with intimacy coordinators,” she said.
She’s seen some bad examples
“However, that being said, I’ve also had a s*** example where someone just made it so weird and so awkward and really wasn’t helpful and kind of was just like wanting to be a part of the set in a way that wasn’t helpful,” Pugh said.
She understands that it’s complicated
“It’s a job that’s still figuring itself out,” the 29-year-old said.
“But I will say that I’ve been able to understand better meaning now through working with great [intimacy coordinators] in sex scenes.”
It’s an important job on set
“Finding the story of what it is, what kind of sex is it, how do you touch each other, how long have you been having sex for,” Pugh continued.
“All of these things really matter, when you are trying to build a relationship that’s been going for 10 years. I’d never thought of it like that before, because sex scenes are so awkward for everybody on set.”
