The Handmaid’s Tale has been an absolute smash hit for Hulu, drawing in tons of viewers every season to watch the dystopian rendition of the near future , originally conceptualized in the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, play out.
As the show’s final season approaches, one of the stars assures us the series will not have the happy ending some fans are hoping for.
We all know ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a grim tale of a dark future.
And one of the show’s stars assures the ending will not change that.
As the show heads into its sixth and final season, actress Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena Joy Waterford, spoke on the PEOPLE Every Day podcast about her time there.
Also heads up, there are some spoilers ahead for season five if you haven’t caught up yet.
Viewers might remember the character of Serena being pretty wicked.
When asked if there’s a possibility her character might be simply misunderstood, Strahovski laughed. “No,” she answered simply.
She says she’s had fun playing this role, but also acknowledged, “It can be pretty conflicting at times to play someone like Serena Joy.”
It’s caused some conflicting feelings.
“I’ve kind of always toed that line of, ‘Oh, this is really fun.’ But it also feels very dirty, kind of justifying a lot of the things that she does — cause my job is to humanize her and all her actions, which are horrible.”
With the final season coming up, fans have begun wondering how to show will end.
Namely between Serena and June, played by Elizabeth Moss. People wonder if they’ll ever join forces or remain viciously divided.
“I don’t know,” Strahovski admitted when asked her opinion.
She has seen some of the speculations about the finale.
And she has her own thoughts on it. “I’ve, I’ve seen some of the commentary and it’s funny how people are like, ‘Oh my gosh, maybe this is the moment where they team up and they take down Gilead and whatever.’
She assures that something like that will never happen.
“But it’s just so idealistic that there’s just no way the writers and Bruce Miller, our showrunner, would do that,” she continued.
“I just don’t think there was a happy ending.”

She ultimately thinks that’s a good thing.
“I think the beauty of the June/Serena [conflict is], that’s where the action is at — when they collide. I would love to see that continue.”
She respects the writers for not giving into the pressure of a ‘happy’ ending.
“Look at this season: the most obvious thing would’ve been let’s make Serena a handmaid. And that would be just, so cool to have that kind of revenge. But, that would be too obvious.”
And she hopes to see more of it in the future.
“I just would love to see that kind of unique storytelling continue ’cause it’s just magnificent.”
Happy ending or not, fans are beyond excited to see this fantastic show’s epic conclusion.
