Unfortunately, still, in 2019, homophobia does exist.
But thankfully, celebrities are using their platforms to raise awareness and combat the hate — one clap-back at a time!
Ariana Grande.
After Ari discovered anti-LGBTQ protestors outside a venue she was performing at, she tweeted her disappointment:
“man… saddened but not surprised by this one bit,” she wrote .
“I’m so sorry any of my fans had to encounter this,” she continued.
“We will do our best to ensure this doesn’t happen again. proud of u all for not fighting / engaging violently. never worth it. wishing him peace & a healed heart cause girl yikes.”
Lena Dunham.
Lena explained that she refuses to get married until same-s*x marriage was legal in all 50 states.
“The idea of having a celebration that can’t be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn’t really feel like a celebration at all,” she said .
Stephen Amell.
Arrow star, Stephen Amell, received a slew of homophic comments on his photo that he posted from the pride parade in Vancouver. To clap-back, he wrote this :
“I had a fantastic weekend in Vancouver with my wife and friends, met some terrific people and more than anything just tried to soak in all the positive energy from people living their best lives,” he wrote. “If I’m in Vancouver next year I won’t just go back, I’ll walk in the parade.”
Ruby Rose.
“You know what needs to stop just as much as homophobia, bullying within the LGBT Community…You can be whoever you are and like whoever you like and WE should spread the love and acceptance we constantly say we don’t receive,” she wrote on her Facebook page .
Ellen Page.
In an interview on The Late Show , Ellen called out the entire state of Indiana for wanting to ban same-s*x marriage.
“The vice president of America wishes that I didn’t have the love with my wife. He wanted to ban that in Indiana, he believes in conversion therapy, he has hurt LGBTQ people so badly as the governor of Indiana,” she said .
She then called out Chris Pratt for his church being infamously anti-LGBTQ.
While Chris was interviewed on The Late Show , he discussed his spiritual side — and Ellen was quick to call him out on that.
Ashley Benson.
After a homophobic troll commented on Ashley’s photo, telling her she should date men instead, she clapped back by saying: “You need to mind your own business. Stop making things up.”
Cara Delevingne, Ashley’s girlfriend then also stepped in — with a bit more gusto.
“You are [expletive] disgusting! If you have a problem with true love then come and say this s**t to my face instead pathetically hating through Instagram. I genuinely feel sorry for you both, you are clearly not happy in your lives and have far too much time on your hands. Maybe get a hobby that doesn’t involve being homophobic and hating others for being happy.”
Brad Pitt.
Brad Pitt recently demanded that his photo be taken down off of the ” straight pride ” campaign’s website, Super Happy Fun America, after they tried to use him as their mascot.
Chris Evans.
Like Brad Pitt, Chris was also not a supporter of the “straight pride” capaign. He stepped in to combat the movement by protesting it on Twitter — dragging anyone that supports it.
Taylor Swift.
Taylor wrote a letter to Senator Lemar Alexander, in support of protecting the LGBTQ community and posted the letter on Instagram .
“While we have so much to celebrate, we also have a great distance to go before everyone in this country is truly treated equally,” she captioned it.
“In excellent recent news, the House has passed the Equality Act, which would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in their places of work, homes, schools, and other public accommodations,” she continued.
“The next step is that the bill will go before the Senate. I’ve decided to kick off Pride Month by writing a letter to one of my senators to explain how strongly I feel that the Equality Act should be passed. I urge you to write to your senators too.”
“While there’s no information yet as to when the Equality Act will go before the Senate for a vote, we do know this: Politicians need votes to stay in office.”
“Pressure from massive amounts of people is a major way to push politicians towards positive change,” she continued.
“Our country’s lack of protection for its own citizens ensures that LGBTQ people must live in fear that their lives could be turned upside down by an employer or landlord who is homophobic or transphobic.”
“The fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.”
“Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally,” she concluded.
Here’s to even more celebs shutting down the LGBTQ hate in 2019!
