A social media user sparked a viral debate when he posted on X/Twitter an image of a towel, the item present in every home and used everyday across the globe, and asked a very interesting question regarding its usage.
He took to X/Twitter to ask the question

User @natemcgrady took to X/Twitter to ask about the usage of a specific part in a towel. He highlighted the ridges on it and asked, “what is the purpose of this part of a towel?”, and people came into the comments with honest guesses and jokes alike.
He started with taking his own guess

Nate replied to his own tweet with a guess, saying, “I’m convinced that it only exists to shrink and make it impossible to fold the towel nicely, causing you to buy another towel.”
A few people started making jokes in the replies

Some of the most liked replies to his question were jokes about the whole ordeal, because I don’t know about you, but I have no idea what that part of the towel is for either.
One person joked, ”Racing stripes. It makes them dry faster.”
There were also a few more creative jokes

You can only imagine how many people made butt jokes about the usage of that part of the towel. But others had hilarious takes with one person writing, “It’s a scam by Big Towel to steal precious softness from our lives! Give us back our soft bits, you monsters!!”
Another joked, “The purpose of it is to annoy me and to make me feel grateful for the other side of the towel that actually dries your hands all the way.”
Some guesses actually sounded like the real deal

Some people replied with explanations that actually sound pretty convincing, with one person guessing, “It’s a tread line. When your towel thins out to that level, it’s time to replace your towel. Mileage may vary.”
But while that sounds plausible, the answer is that it’s to protect the weaving of the towel. One person explained, “It’s called a dobby weave. It’s maintains structure and prevents curling. It’s also decorative.”
It is in fact a ‘dobby border’

The truth is those strips are a ‘dobby border’, as one user explained it, “It’s called ‘The dobby border’, and it reinforces the fabric, prevents fraying, adds a decorative touch, and helps with folding. It’s also less absorbent due to its tighter weave.”
Well, there you have it folks, another one of those questions that only hits you at 3am, answered.
