US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy with a shocking speech at the United Nations.
He was speaking at the General Assembly
The US President was speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday, September 23, where he slammed other countries for their open borders.
He accused countries of falling apart due to their immigration policies, and even said they were ‘going to hell.’
Trump harshly addressed leaders
In his remarks, Trump described open borders as a ‘failed experiment.’
He told world leaders, “When your prisons are filled with so-called asylum seekers who repay kindness – and that’s what they did, they repaid kindness with crime.”
He said they were ‘going to hell’
The POTUS went on, “It’s time to end the failed experiment of open borders, you have to end it now. I can tell you, I’m really good at this stuff – your countries are going to hell.”
Throughout his speech at the UN, Trump emphasized his anti-immigration stance.
Trump praised his administration
He went on to praise his own administration, saying, “Once we started detaining and deporting everyone who crossed the border and removing illegal aliens from the United States, they simply stopped coming.”
“They’re not coming anymore,” Trump added.
He also slammed the UN itself
Within his shocking speech, the US President even criticized the UN itself, suggesting that they failed to play an impactful role in peace negotiations.
“It’s too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them. That being the case, what is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked.
He then mentioned being worthy of a Nobel Prize
Trump went on to mention the idea of being worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize, as he claimed he had ended seven ‘unendable wars’ through US diplomacy.
“What I care about is not winning prizes, it’s saving lives,” he said.
Trump went on to talk about international crime
The President then said the US military was targeting drug cartels near Venezuela, and claimed that they had struck three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics.
He declared, “To every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the United States of America, please be warned that we will blow you out of existence.”
He praised the UN elsewhere
Despite his repeated criticism of the UN during his speech, Trump spoke differently about the organization in a later sit down with Secretary General António Guterres.
He called the UN ‘a great opportunity for peace’, adding, “Our country is behind the United Nations 100%.”
