Donald Trump spoke at Charlie Kirk’s funeral on Sunday, September 21, and shared the one thing Kirk asked him to do before he died.
He spoke for over 40 minutes
The 79-year-old President spoke for more than 40 minutes on stage at the public memorial service for Charlie Kirk on Sunday, which took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Trump claimed Kirk made one request
In his eulogy, Trump claimed that in one of their final conversations, Kirk made him a plea to ‘save’ Chicago.
He recalled Kirk saying to him, “Please, sir, save Chicago.” The activist was a native of the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Ill.
Trump said he’ll do exactly that
The President said, “We’re gonna do that, we’re gonna save Chicago from horrible crime.”
Trump has threatened to send National Guard troops into Chicago as part of a federal crackdown on crime, something he has done before in Washington, D.C.
He expressed his pride in the speech
Elsewhere in his long speech, Trump said, “I’m so proud of Washington, D.C., and now we’re going into Memphis, and we’ll get that one straightened out fast.”
Trump shared that he’d be doing what Kirk asked
He added, “And then we’re going into some others, but we’re going to go do Chicago, and we’re going to have Charlie very much in mind when we go into Chicago, and we’ll get that one straight.”
He went on about other topics
Within his wide-ranging funeral speech, Trump went on about other topics, saying that his administration is planning on presenting an ‘answer’ for autism in an announcement on Monday, September 22.
“I think we found an answer to autism,” he told those at Kirk’s memorial, “Won’t let it happen anymore.”
Research has debunked this
According to The Washington Post, the Trump administration plans on tying autism to Tylenol use during pregnancy, despite the fact that more than a decade of research has proved that there is no link.
He praised Kirk in the eulogy
Trump also praised Kirk in his eulogy, calling him ‘a giant of his generation’. He said, “I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie.”
Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.
They’ve charged a suspect
Prime suspect Tyler Robinson has been accused of the shooting and was formally charged with single counts of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm and violent offense in the presence of a child as well as two counts each of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
